Ward -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Proceedings of a refimental court martial conconvied at camp 2 N.C. Infty by virtue of the following order viz: Jan 18th 1865 Special Order W2 A regimental court martial is hereby ordered to convine at the quarters of Lt Fughuim to-morrow morning at 10 oclock or as soon thereafter as practical for the trial of Prvt Ward of co D and such as the offenous as may be brought before it. B --BF Bray Co.A ----------------CO.K Privt Joshua Ward CO "E" the accused also present. The Recorder having read the order convening the court-asked the accused privt Joshua Ward if he had any objection to any member named ------ to which he replied, I have not. The court was then duly ----by the Recorder and the Recorder was duly sworn by the presiding officer of the court, in the presince of the accused The charge was read aloud by the Recorder Charge & specification against Joshua Ward private of Co."E" 2 NC Infantry. Charge Absence without-leave Sprcification In this that the --Joshua Ward a privt of Co."E" 2 NC Infantry a duly inlisted solder in the confederate State armies and having recivied pay as such ,recivied a furlongh from hospital at Farmville Va. for sixty (60) days, from August the 19th-- 1864 and remained absent without leave after the expiration of his furlough until on a about the 5th day of December A.D.1864 ------------------------------------------ "Joshua Ward you have heard the charge ----against you, how say you guilty or not guilty"? To which the accused Joshua Ward pleaded as follows: Guilty. ---G.M. --- Company "E" 2 NC a witness on the part of the proscution was duly sworn By Recorder: Ques. Do you know the accused to be a duly inlisted solder in the Confedrate States service and has he recivied pay as such? Ans. I do and he has recivied pay. Ques. Did he receive a furlough from Hospital at Farmville VA on the 19th day of August 1864 for 60 days? Ans. He did. I received a notice to that effect. Ques. What time did he return to his command? Ans. -- 5th 1864 Ques. Where was he from the expiration of his furlough up to the time he returned? Ans. I don't know. at home I suppose Ques. Did he produce any papers on his return showing that he was legally absent after the expiration of his furlough? Ans.No, he produced nothing but his furlough. Ques. Did you hear from him during the time he was absent? Ans. I did not. By the Court: Ques. What time was this man inlisted? Ans. 31st of August 1863. By the accused: Ques. Will you state to the court what kind of a soldier I have been. Ans. He has not been a very good soldier. By the court: Ques. Has he ever shown a disposition to skuck duty on the field? Ans. I have never seen him show any such disposition. Ques. Has he at any time shown a disposition not to perform his duties in camp? Ans. I think he has he complains agreat deal at what he has to do. Ques. Was the furlough given him on account of wounds? Ans. I don't think it was, he was wounded when he left the company but I think he was sick when he received the furlough. The statements of the parties being thus in the hands of the court, the court was cleared for delibration and having ---- consisident the evedence a----find the accused Privt Joshua Ward CO "E" 2 NC Infty,as follows: Of the Spicification:"Guilty" Of the Charge: "Guilty" And the court do therefore sentence him the said Joshua Ward company "E" 2 NC Infty to grub stumps for thirty(30) days from sun rise to sun set in regimental parade grounds.
