Note: Information I found on a family tree about a Jesse Ray, born 10/16/1760 Amhurst, Va; died 2/10/1839 Ashe Cnty, NC married Ellender Baker born 12/24/1765 Wilkes Cnty, NC and died 12/22/1842 in Ashe Cnty, NC: According to legend Jesse and brothers James and William came to America prior to the Revolutionary War from South West Scotland. They came to North Carloina via Culpeper Co. Va., James went west to Morristown, Tenn. spelling his name Rhea, William settled in the midsection of North Carolina. Jesse came to Wilkes now Ashe Co., and settled in the Beaver Creek area. He served in the revolutionary War at different periods from 1779 to 1781. On December 16,1800, He was appointed Colonel of the Militia for the County of Ashe by then Governor Benjamin Williams. In 1826, He was given a land grant of 5,799 acres in Ashe County in consideration for establishing and operating an Iron Ore Refinery to produce much needed iron for the area. This grant was awarded by then Governor James Iredell of North Carolina.
