Note: John left Alabama when he was a young man intending to go to California in the gold rush of the 49ers. He never got any further than Texas. He taught school in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas for a short time, then returned to Winston Co., Mississippi. He was a soldier from Winston county in the Civil War. He was captured and held prisoner on Johnson's Island, a Federal Prison in Illinois. After the war he returned to Alabama, then to Winston Co, Miss. where he taught school for 16 years. He made several trips down into Leake Co, Miss. to see grandparents Lafayette Marshall Sharp and they spent many happy hours together discussing experiences of the war.
