a. Note:   . 8, 2003. at his home. He had been in failing health. Born Nov. 8, 1919, in Orbisonia, he was a son of the late Van and Jenny Varner. He married the former Mary Ellen Campbell April 9,1938, in Orbisonia. Mrs. Varner preceded him in death March 11, 1980. He is survived by four children; Shirley Hess, Mount Union. R.R., 1;Charles W. Varner, Newton Hamilton; Margaret Ramsey, Rockhill Furnace;and Mary Smith. Shirleysburg. There are 18 grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Frank Varner and Theodore "Doc" Varner, and the following brothers and sisters; Chris Varner, Mike Varner, Eva Worthy, Olive McConaughey, Earl Hamman. Mary Stake and Margaret Rider. Mr. Varner was of the Protestant faith. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He retired in 1981 after 19 years on the custodial staff in the Mount Union Area School District. Prior to that he was employed for 15 years at the former Harbison-Walker Refractories, Mount Union. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10. at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, 61 E.Shirley St., Mount Union, with the Rev. Gordon Ross officiating. Interment will be made in Haven Rest Memorial Park, Shirleysburg, R.R.
