Watkin Watkin a highly respected citizen of Saltillo, Pa., passed away at his home on Sunday morning, February 1st, after being in ill health for some time. He suffered a stroke a month prior to his death. Mr. Watkin was born in Wales on June 30, 1845, and was aged 79 years, seven months at the day of his departure from this life. When nine years old, he came with his father to this country. The voyage was made in a sail boat, requiring 45 days to make the journey. Soon after landing in New York, the family found their way to the Broad Top coal regions. His life from then on was spent on the boundry of Huntingdon County. He spent 57 consecutive years mining coal, retiring from work about eight years ago on accounty of his advanced age. In 1868 he was united in marriage to Margaret Morgan. To their union twelve children were born. All grew to mature years, two daughters, Sarah, wife of Zane Bell, and Katie, wife of isaac Cook, preceding their father in death. Mr. and Mrs. Watkin lived together for 56 years. Mr. Watkin was a man who enjoyed a large circle of friends, who held him in high esteem, on account of his fine christioan character. All who knew him, grew to love him. he always saw the good in folks and was slow to believe anything to the contrary. He was a devoted husband and father and a loyal friend. He was a member of the M. E. Church of Saltillo, being interested in the church work, supporting it by his presence and help as long as he was physically able. Funeral services were held at his home, Rev. S. H. Engler officiating, assisted by Rev. H. T. Covert of Mifflintown. The men's chorus of Saltillo rendered the music. Interment was made in the Saltillo cemetery.
