Note: nder Clayton b.abt 1770 died before 1850. His wife was Mary Hockenberry b. 1772 died at Vira 20 Jan 1858)and is buried in the Methodist Church cemetery. I went all over that cemetery when I was there in 1976, but I found no grave for Alexander Clayton. The Methodist church was not open and inquires in the town told me the minister was away. I wrote to the church later but received no reply. I assume Alexander died elsewhere in the county and his wife went to live with their daughter Margaret Clayton (1797-1886) married to William Mitchell (1798-1875)as she is buried in the Mitchell plot. I did notice while I was there that the name Hockenberry was still on some mail boxes. I have been trying in the last month to trace my Hockenberry line with little success. I thought it possible Alexander Clayton, who was a miller might have apprenticed for Peter Hockenbery in Fannet Twp Franklin |Co. who owned mills, and met Mary Hockenberry there. Any connection we can make on the Clayton line would be very helpful, as this line is one that was initially researched my great aunt. Other than the one trip to Vira I have done no primary research on this family. How do you connect to this family? Sorry about the delay in contacting you! Your information regarding Alexander indicates that he is older than his wife. His wife Mary (1773-1858) a Hockenberry and is burried in Vira... (outside of Lewistown). There is no Alexander that I've found in this cementary. Do you have any idea where he's at?The 1810 census index lists Alexander in Fermanagh Township, Mifflin County. I do know that Fermanagh is now part of Juniata County and always thought Mifflintown would be a good place to start.Who is the Andrew listed by the 1810 Census in Union Township, is this a brother? There is also a John listed 1810 Census in Union Twp, is this his father or another brother? James is also listed by some as a brother. The 1790 Census lists a Widow Clayton with three males in the household. Does that mean father John may have died prior to 1790? Ok, what about David... where does he fit in? And last but not least... the Colonel! Colonel Asher Clayton is documented to having land in nearby Juniata circa 1767.There are clues that suggest John is from Chester County. Other clues indicate that this family could be from North Carolina that ventured there from the New Jersey Clan. Then there is the possibility that Alex and brother(s) were born in England and imigrated with John and Mary.I would be very interested to hear from you regarding any Clayton info. Thanks much. Keith
Note: John Clayton born abt 1750 died abt 1843. His wife was Mary Power/Powers. Their son was Alexa
