Notes
a. Note:   Obituary - Beautiful Tribute Paid Mrs. Barrett Custer, Aug. 5. Funeral services for Mrs. George Barrett were held Friday afternoon from Custer Congregational church, preceded by a prayer service by Rev. Beebe at the home. A large number of friends and relatives gathered for the rites. Rev. Joseph Sanders of Big Rapids spoke words of comfort, choosing his text from the book of Revelation. Mrs. Sanders and Mrs. Hicks sang "I'll Meet You at the Eastern Gate," "Face to Face" and "Sometime We'll Understand". Mrs. Barrett had requested tht services for her be like those for her husband and this was carried out with the exception that two grandsons were unable to be present. Her grandsons Maurice Barrett, Lester Slack, Leonard McClain, Howard McClain, Alfred McClain and Claud McClain were pallbearers and bore the flower-covered casket to Custer cemetery, where interment was made. Those coming from a distance to attend the services were Harvey Barrett of Elkhart, Ind.; Mr. and Mrs. Lester Slack of Bristol Ind.; Leonard and Alfred McClain of Elkhart, Mr. and Mrs. Howard McClain and Claud McClain of Flushing, Mrs. Clara Willour of Flint, Mr. and Mrs. Allen King of Woodland, Mr. Mary Dague and Mrs. Eleanor Shue of Ludington and Eseler Hanna of Reed City. Sabrina Johnson was born at Lancaster, Pa., and came to Michigan with her parents when eight years of age, settling at Hawley where she grew to womanhood. In 1867 she was united in marriage with George H. Barrett, who passed away seven years ago. Their early life was spent in church work, Mr. Barrett having charge of churches in Kalkaska, Colfax and Coral before coming to Summit, where the family lived until they moved to the place now owned by Ned Allison. In 1886 hey purchased a farm south of Custer, where they lived until 1912, moving to Custer. Poor health compelled Mr. Barrett to discontinue work on the farm. One of the happy occasions in Mr. and Mrs. Barrett's life was celebration of their golden wedding anniversary with all their children at home. For 52 years they were faithful and honored members of the Free Methodist church of South Custer and for many years contributed their talent and material things for the advancement of the church. Mrs. Barrett always exemplified Christian graces and was patient, kind and loving in her ministration to her family and friends. Surviving are two daughters Mrs. Hattie McClain, who has cared for her mother since the passing of her father, and Mrs. Clara Shaw of Detroit, 16 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and a great great grandchild and sister Mrs. Nate Sutton of Rose Center.
