Notes
a. Note:   The records of the Devon Quarterly Courts show that in June 1783 William Tancock was tried for stealing one half peck (about 15 pounds) of wheat, valued at six pence, from one Thomas French. At the Midsummer court session, William was found guilty of petty larceny; that charge resulting from the value of the goods stolen. He was subsequently whipped, probably in public, and then set free.
