a. Note:   h is was about 1876. Elza was just a little over 17 years old. The only wo rk was picking cotton. They were travelling in a covered wagon pull ed by a team oxen. They left Clinton County Kentucky, going into a pa rt of Tennessee, Missouri, and Arkansas (of course they had to cross the M ississippi river) into Indiaaan territory (which later became part of t he state of Oklahoma). They touched a part of Kansas, stopping in Paris T exas. In Paris Texas, Elza met his wife--to-be, Emily Barber. Thye were marri ed and from this union, three daughters were born: Minnie, Hester Leon a, and Dora Lou. In addition, an infant son died at birth in 1886. Elza and his wife were divorced on the charge of infidelity on Emily, a nd Elza received custody of thier three dauughters. He loaded his three c hildren and all of their meager posessions into a covered wagon and mov ed back to Clinton County Kentucky. A short time later after returning to Kentucky, he married Anny Bell Gentl e. [Spelling of name is in dispute - Anna, AnnyBell, Anny, or Once more Elza traveled to Paris Texas with his family. Sarah Lee was bo rn August 23 1889. And again, they moved back to Clinton County Kentuck y. In the 1890 census (6th district, Clinton County Kentucky), the followi ng family members are listed: Elza Anna Minnie Hester Dora Sarah Elza and Anna had nine more children: four girls and five boys (one infa nt girl, Velma, died at birth in 1896). All 9 children were born in Kentu cky. Elza was spoken of as being a very up-right man, strong in his belief in G od, and his love for all men. It was a known fact in the county that if a ny person were in need, he would stop whatever he was doing, even in palni tng time, and go help the one in need. --paraphrased from Irby/Smith document...
