Note: s/o James of Ireland & f/o Samuel; Migrated from County Down, Ireland about 1736, arriving at New Castle, DE & settling first in Chester Co., PA. After 5 years there, John, along with his 5 sons & 4 Daughters, moved to Augusta Co., VA. In 1746 he bought abt 375 acres near Stuart's Draft. He later sold his lands to his sons James, John, Samuel and William. His son Anthony went to Scotland to be educated in the Ministry. JOHN BLACK son of James of County Down Ireland, was born in 1698, and died in 1769 and had five sons and four daughters, whom he brought into Virginia viz; JAMES, JOHN, SAMUEL, William and ANTHONY. The names of the daughters were not given in this record, but as stated John settled first in Chester County, Penn. where they remained for five years. There seems to be no record of John's wife, but there is a probability her given name was Mary. John Black (A1), the direct ancestor of the Indiana Blacks, also settled in Augusta Co V A with his five sons and four daughters. There he took lands which he later sold to his sons James III, John, Samuel (A11), and William. John Black with two brothers and their families emigrated from Ireland to America in about 1738. They landed on the Delaware River about where Wilmington now stands. They settled on the forks of the Brandywine Creek, in what was known as Penns County or Pennsylvania, remaining there for a few years. One brother afterwards settled in New Jersey. His other brother remained in PA, but after a few years a portion of his family moved to Albemarle Co VA and from there some moved on to Kentucky near where Lexington now stands. John Black and his family moved from the forks of the Brandywine Creek and settled in Al bermarle Co VA. John and Catherine had five sons and four daughters. Two sons went west into Kentucky and Tennessee; one of these sons was never heard of again and it was supposed that he was killed by Indians. The other brother who went west settled on the Tennessee River near the town of Knoxville. His descendants were highly respected citizens in the Knoxville area. Children: 1.
