a. Note:   Benjamin Majors enlisted in the civil war in Butler County onSeptember4, 1862. He was a private in Company B, 17th AlabamaInfantry Regimentas was his brother James. He was captured nearNashville TennesseeonDecember 15, 1864 and sent to Camp Douglas,Chicago, Illinois to beprocessed and sent to Military Prison inLouisville, Kentucky. HisAlabama Civil War military records statethat he applied for apensionfor going blind as the result of a musketball to the headduring theBattle at Kennesaw Mountain. However, modern science hasproved that blindness was inherited in the Majorsfamily and heprobably would have gone blind during his lifetimeregardless of thehead injury. The inherited gene for blindness thatis prevalent in theMajors family is called "Sticklers Syndrome" andis being extensivelystudied by Dr. Scotty Parma, a descendant ofBenjamin Majors.
