Note: From TW (E-mail dated 11 October 2005"]: Peter Shannon immigrated to Deadwood, SD, where he worked with his brother, who was a barber. I don't know why Mary Jane was there, but they met and married...Peter later ran general stores in the silver mining town of Neihart and then in Great Falls, finally and for many years in Lewistown, Mont. While the family were there, they homesteaded, a process which required some members of the family to "prove" their claim by living on the land during the summers for three years and producing crops. The third year there was a good crop of wheat and then along came a hail storm which ruined it. and therefore their hopes of becoming ranchers. But undaunted, Mary Jane told the girls to gather up some of the hailstones and then made ice cream. Real British fortitude. Peter Shannon went bankrupt (apparently he was a typical Irishman, poetic [note the three girls' names] and not good at collecting bills). At that point, when my mother had just graduated from high school, the family moved to Bremerton, where Evie had gone to enlist in the women's army corps (only to change her mind when she found that it was composed of some not so nice girls) and then settled ona job at the Naval base (I think). Both Estie and Dutchie worked as secretaries. ... You will have gathered that much of the family is Roman Catholic. This is particularly true of the Irish cousins, and also true of the Poiriers. I think it is an interesting suggestion of the family dynamic in the case of Peter and Mary Jane. Evie was baptised and confirmed a Roman Catholic; Estie baptised a Roman Catholic, confirmed an Episcopalean; Helen baptised and confirmed an Episcopalean. Guess who increasingly dominated that family!"
