a. Note:   Possibly fought in the Battle of Little Big Horn with General Custer in 1876 under an assumed name.
 William hated Custer and had been kicked out of the army by Custer, he had been an officer. He went back to St. Paul and got a job as a Telegraph operator. He hissed the Cavalry so he went back to North Dakota and rejoined under and assumed name, John Haley said it was Mr. Black, William said it was Mr White. He was with the 7th Cavalry as an enlisted man stationed at Fort Lincoln. If he did not die at Little Big Horn (he may have deserted, knowing what a fool Custer was), he would have never again been able to make himself known to family.
