Note: The 1900 Van Zandt Co., TX census has J. W. Nalls living with his parents, Samuel & Elmira Nalls, and lists 3 grandchildren living with them. The youngest is 4 Mos. old, and Gerthey Allen Nalls is not listed on the page. The 1880 Van Zandt Co., TX Census has her name spelled Gertha, however she is referred to as Gerthey and Gerthie in other references. Gerthie's son Orbie Delk Nalls told his granddaughter Carol Edwards Whitton, that his mother died 6 days after the birth of her youngest child Earnest, and was buried in Cedar Grove Cem., Kaufman CO., TX. Gerthie's mother, siblings, and grandparents are buried there, but her grave is not marked. "All I know about Uncle Dempsey is that he was an in-law of some kind, and I recall that Grandmother would tell me that the man would make (I believe it was Gertha) upset with the way he would literally toss money around. Example: The year is unknown to me, but at one time there was a horse race, and Dempsey had entered one of his horses and had won. He celebrated by throwing handfuls of money out to the spectators, and Gertha had gotten mad at him and told him that it was hard enough for her (financially) seeing him waste that money, whereupon he pulled out a fistful from his pocket and gave it to her causing her to cry. At that time Gertha was not faring too well money-wise." Mary Ann Brown-Powell Feb. 2008. Note: Uncle Dempsey Fuller was related to the Allens through the Murff side - a quote on the Kaufman Co., TX Web Site states that Dempsey Fuller and his brother Alcey were 'shady characters' who owned and operated a horse racing track. Illegal gambling at the track was one of his main sources of income. "One uncle I talked to today said he remembered his Dad telling him on the day of Gerthy's burial, they took her body to the cemetery in a wagon and not many people attended the service because it was raining so hard, My Mother told me she remembers her Dad telling her that his Mother, Gerthy called him into her room, just before she passed away and told him that she was going to have to leave them and asked him to promise her that he would look after the baby, Ernest." Carol Whitten-granddaughter of Orbie Delk Nalls, the oldest son of Gerthy Allen and J.W. Nalls. 4-17-2008.
