Note: December 13, 1889, T.A. Allen sold a parcel of land listed as "part of the 320 acre W. A. Allen survey" to his son Guy Allen for the sum of $55.00. The total acreage is not listed , but the transaction is recorded in Van Zandt Co., TX Deeds of Record, Book 41, page 63 & 64. The following excerpts from local newspapers chronicle event relating to a shooting involving Guy: Canton Telephone March 25, 1892 - "Another killing occurred in Wills Point last Monday, the 21st., at about 6:00 P.M. , Guy Allen killed Robert Layne, Jr., by shooting him with a pistol, firing three times, the first shot taking effect in the head near the ear, the second, in the back, and the last missing him. The first shot caused death instantly. The tragedy was enacted in Laynes's grocery store. A coroner's jury was empaneled, and rendered a verdict that Layne came to his death by a gunshot wound inflicted by Allen. By order of Judge McCord, Allen was brought to Canton, and was granted bail in the sum of $1,250.00, which he readily gave. His trial will be had before Judge McCord, April 11. Allen talks freely about the killing, and says he and the deceased attempted to draw their weapons at the same time, but he (Allen) got in his work first. No one witnessed the tragedy. Both parties are young men, of good families, and respected. Frail woman is at the bottom of the tragedy." Canton Telephone, April 14, 1893 - "Guy Allen Murder Case" - "The Guy Allen murder case was called Monday morning in District Court. The examination of witnesses and speeches by the attorneys consumed the time up to Wednesday evening at 4 o'clock, when Judge McCord submitted his charge and the entire case to the jury. The attorney's on each side made a hard fight. At this writing the jury is still considering what to do with the defendant." Canton Telephone, April 21, 1893 -"Two more of Van Zandt's juries surprised several of the self confident natives last week: Guy Allen who murdered young Bob Layne last year, was given 2 years in the pen." Van Zandt County Register of Prisoners- Book 1- line # 97- Guy Allen-Confined in the County Jail. Note: In testimony not published in the local paper, Guy killed Robert Layne for seducing one of his young sisters. The name of the sister is not mentioned. It is not noted whether or not he served the full term of his prison sentence. (May have been shortened by a plea from an 'Uncle Dempsy Fuller) Guy Allen died April 25, 1896, at the age of 23 years, 10 months, and 24 days; in Van Zandt Co. of pneumonia; after days of plowing the fields in the cold and rain.
