Note: Sent to live with her Paternal Grandmother in the Waikato when she was very young. Her Grandmother resented the fact she was not given a son to raise and by all accounts was very harsh on Irene, forcing her to live in the coal shed and work as a slave. Irene's father used to visit regualrily and she longed to return to Auckalnd with him. At the age of about 9 (about 1928) she ran away from the Waikato (with help from the local Iwi) and returned 'home'. She left home in 1939, aged 20, and became a Psych Nurse (Tokanui, King Country). She returned to Auckland in 1943 when the war was in full swing. Soon after this she met and married 'Doc' Maloney. After the death of her husband she became a 'free spirit'. Travelling to Israel and India on spiritual journies, writing often and recapturing her youth as best she could.
