Notes
a. Note:   John was born to a farming family in Queens Co. Ireland (now Co. Laois), approximately 1833 (date calculated from his recorded age at the time of death, exact date unknown). I have not been able to identify his family as the Dunnes are prolific in the area and the name John somewhat common. However I havent tried too hard as of yet. From his death notice I do know that he was born to a farming family. Upon reaching manhood, which I take to be 21, he joined the Irish Constabulary, something that was often done by middle sons of Irish farming families. Whether he was a Catholic or not I do not know for sure, but I am assuming he was (his daughter married in a Catholic Church). It is stated he stayed with the Constabulary for 7 years before emigrating to Victoria in 1859. This throws some doubt either on the age he joined the Constabulary, or on his birth date. He either joined the Constabulary at age 19 or was born in around 1831. The dates are close enough that small errors can be allowed for (i.e. I dont know what month he was born in or if 7 years was 7 full years or 6+ years). A John Dunne arrived (unassisted) in Melbourne aboard the Merchant Prince on the 26th of July 1859, aged 26 years. Once in Victoria he spent a year as manager of a station, after which he joined the Melbourne Mounted Police. So that puts him joining the MMP around 1860. His death notice states that he was selected by Captain Standish, acting on behalf of the Provincial Govt. of Southland, to proceed to N.Z. to take charge of the gold escort at the Queenstown Goldfield in 1863. According to information received he arrived in Waipori in 1864 and was appointed to the Otago Police on the 15th of November 1864, being sworn on the 1st of December that year. At the time of appointment he was listed as being 29 years old, 5'9" tall with dark brown hair, dark complexion and dark eyes. He remained in charge of the escort, and Southland Mounted Police, for approximately 18 months. After this he took charge of the Tuapeka District, where he remained until moving to Balclutha in about 1870 at the rank of Sergeant. In Balclutha he was chief police office for 2 years before resigning on the 3rd of September 1872 and starting up in business. He owned the Newmarket Hotel in Balclutha between approximately 1872 and 1880, after which he moved to the Crown Hotel where I believe he stayed until his death. In 1863 a Captain John Joseph Dunne led a troop of aprox. 400 men (the Victorian Volunteers) from Melbourne to Auckland to take up as part of the colonial force here. The troop marched off to Papakura and I do not know what happened to any of the men after that. From what I have read so far it seems that they were split up and moved to wherever the need was. I have not yet ascertained if this Captain John Dunne was the same John Dunne that took up in Southland, but the dates do match. I have more research to do on this. He was elected to Borough Council on 1Aug 1873, and took his seat on August 6. With rare exceptions he served as Mayor or councillor through to about 1905-1910; he filled the office of Mayor for no fewer than 14 years (which at the time was a record for New Zealand). He was a member of the Clutha River Board for about 10 years, and took an active part in getting the Provincial Govt. to place the first steamer on the Clutha river. Apart from his civil duties and hotel business he also appears to of been an active breeder and racer of horses. A passion that his son continued. He married while at Tuapeka to a Margaret Hogan and had 5 sons and 3 daughters. In 1882 he owned land in Bruce (2 Acres, 60), Tuapeka, (40), Balclutha (3340).

In an email from Ashley Blair (Ashleyblair@xtra.co.nz) dated 11-Jul-2004: I am investigating an 1865 murder on the Otago goldfields and the policeman who made the arrest was John Dunne. I wonder if the John Dunne you know of is the one that I have information on? Dunne, (or Dunn) Mounted Constable John, No. 460 1835 - 18?? Waipori policeman who arrested Jones and gave evidence at the trial. In the newspaper reports of the trial his name was given as "Dunn" but in all official correspondence he is "Dunne." He came to Waipori in 1864. He was appointed to the Otago Police on 15 November 1864 and sworn 1 December 1864. He was aged 29 on appointment, 5 foot 9 inches tall with dark brown hair, dark complexion and his eye colour was described as "dark". He was formerly a member of the Irish Constabulary and also the Victorian Police. Dunne was single when he was appointed and a Roman Catholic. He resigned from the police on 3rd September 1872. From: "Ashleyblair" <Ashleyblair@xtra.co.nz> Add to Address Book To: "Justin Maloney" <justin_maloney@yahoo.com> Subject: More on John Dunne Date: Mon, 2 Aug 2004 21:31:24 +1200 Hi Justin I have just received a reply to my letter from the Victoria Police Historical Unit. Their records state that John Dunne was a: 'Constable in Victoria Police, appointed 2 January 1863, age 28 years, place of birth, Ireland, resigned 17 July 1863, rank constable. ' However, the letter also stated: "Please note that from the 5 July 1999 Victoria Police members' record of Conduct and Service sheets are not available for copying due to the restoration of these vital records. Your request will be filed in this office and when these records are available again for copying you will be sent the additional information." I will keep you posted. I have also found an entry for John Dunne in Rombouts, M.J. (2002) A register of Irish immigrants to Otago: Southland 'Dunne, John born 1833 in Queens Co. Ireland; died 1 July 1912. Married Margaret nee Mixner (c 1842/5 1905) in 1859, he arrived in Melbourne, joined the Melbourne Mounted Police and was selected to go to NZ to take charge of the gold escort of the Queenstown goldfield in 1863, married at Invercargill 22 April 1866; in charge of the Tuapeka District for 7 years, transferred to Balclutha in 1870 and resigned in 1872; hotel keeper until prohibition in 1894; Mayor of Balclutha; buried Balclutha Old Cemetery, Otago. (Cemetery Record, ODT, Tablet, Mataura Ensign, Lake Wakatipu Mail, Otago and Southland Cyclopaedia, Skinner*, Catholic Marriage Records.)' * Skinner, E. (1947) Waitahuna Memories. I think I have persuaded my son and daughter in law who are in London to visit the National Archives in Kew, so I hope to have some news on that front in a while. I have found only two records relating to 'Dunn,' (none for Dunne) in Passenger Lists Victoria, AUS outward to NZ Part Two, 1861-1865. The first is for Dunn (sic) J., age 27, single male, from Ireland who left Melbourne on the 31 August 1863 on the 'Star of India' which went to Auckland. The second is for Dunn, John, single male, miner, from England who left Melbourne on the 13 August 1863 on the 'Laurence Brown' which went to Port Chalmers. Bit of a problem with conflicting information . . . . Regards Ashley Regarding the RIC: You had to be 19 to join, but if your father was in the service you could be aged 18 years. Similarly, you had to be 5'9" in height, but if your father was in the RIC you could be 5'8". You could not serve in your home county or that of your wife and you had to have seven years service before you were permitted to marry. Activities as a policeman in Otago follow: Appointed 15 November 1864 and sworn 1 December 1864. Age 29, 5 foot 9 inches, dark brown hair, dark complexion, eye colour "dark". Former member of the Irish Constabulary and also the Victorian Police. Single, Roman Catholic. Resigned on 3rd September 1872 (Police Staff Register 1861-1943, p.112. Dunedin Regional Office, Archives New Zealand) Mounted Constable Dunne received a 5 reward "for zeal in the arrest of George Clarkson." Clarkson was arested in July 1865 for tresspass on the Commercial Bank at Waipori and was sentenced to three months imprisonment with hard labour (Otago Police Gazette 1 Aug 1865, p41).
