Notes
a. Note:   Abram Bruce was born in 1791 in Massachusetts. He died on 2 May 1878 in Pitcher, NY. According to George Nixon, in "Biographical Review of Otsego County, New York", in a biographical sketch of Ervin J. Bruce (son of Matthias Bruce) it is written: "Matthias Bruce was born in Middlesex, Mass., in 1790, and died in the town of Pittsfield in 1865. He had his eldest brother, Abram, came from Massachusetts to the State of New York in 1813, but while en route they were subpoenaed in an important lawsuit in Massachusetts, and had to return. When discharged they again started for New York on foot, came to Otsego County, and settled in the town of Burlington." The biography continues with the history of Matthias Bruce. Abram is believed to have married a Polly Briggs, who was born in 1801 in New York. Her maiden name is from Byron and Annie Strawn, additional relatives of this family. According to Abram's granddaughter's obituary, they were direct lineal descendants of King Robert Bruce of Scotland. According to Massachusetts Vital Records, 1841–1910. (From original records held by the Massachusetts Archives. Online database: AmericanAncestors.org, New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2004.) there was an Abram Bruce who died in 1861 from Rheumatism in Newton, Middlesex, MA. It's not clear if he was 32 or 52 at the time of his death, but in either case he wasn't old enough to have been the father of this Abram. According to Massachusetts Vital Records to 1850 (Online Database: AmericanAncestors.org, New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2001-2010), there was an Abraham BRUCE born to Daniel and Bathsheba, on Dec. 23, 1735 in Marlborough, Middlesex, Massachusetts.
