He was a bricklayer by trade which is known from census data and also his daughter Nan Glen Boyden. Further ccording to Nan, he worked for the Glasgow Corporation. He appears to have been living at 3112 or 3H2 or 342 Ballater Street, in the Gorbals, Glasgow, Scotland. Listed as protestant in his wife's application for relief.
