Terry, Nov 20, 1817 1810 1820 Liberty Bedford Co., VA DeWitt, James: 1 male over 45; 1 female over 45 DeWitt Cemetery, Bedford Co., VA: Located on Route 640 between Routes 638 and 639 on land presently owned by Elmer Hatcher, approximately 1 ¼ miles north of Curtis: James Dewitt, Sr. died 1824. Revolutionary War veteran Abigail Dewitt died after 1824, wife of James Dewitt, Sr. (Note: there are approximately 17 Dewitts, their spouses and children buried in this cemetery, the last burial occurring in 1927.) Note: The obituary of one of James Dewitt’s grandsons (See Elisha D. Dewitt) states that his grandfather was “LaFayette’s bodyguards in the War of Revolution”. Obviously, this is family tradition. Will Book 6, p. 84 Bedford Co., VA 7 Jul 1824 I James Dewitt Senior of the County of Bedford being of sound mind and perfect memory do make this my last Will and Testament in the manner and form following to Wit: 1st: I desire that all of my just debts be paid. 2nd I give to my beloved wife Abigail the whole of my estate to be by her enjoyed for and during the term of her natural life. Remainder to be disposed of as is hereinafter directed. 3d At the termination of the life estate vested in my wife my will and desire are that the tract of land whereon I now reside pass to and be equally divided between my son, to Wit: Jesse, Caleb, & Jeremiah. 4th I desire that all my personal estate pass to and be equally divided amongst all my children. If any of my children should be dead at the time of the performance of this my last Will and Testament the part or parts to which he, she or they should have been entitled to upon an equitable division of my estate, shall nevertheless pass to and be equally divided between his her or their children. Now therefore my executors are authorized and empowered to comply with my request. 5. I nominate, constitute and appoint my sons James & Caleb executors of this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking all others.
