Notes
a. Note:   Comfort Coy was born in 1774 in Windsor, Tolland County, Connecticut. His tombstone is incorrect. The handwriting in the Preston Family Bible confused the person who ordered the tombstone carving. The Bible page looks like the writer wrote age 74, but in fact it says age 78, when comparing handwriting samples. He seems to have moved to New York sometime after 1800 and lived there in several places until he left for good in 1850 and relocated to Michigan. In Census Reports, Comfort was listed as living in Lebanon NY in 1810, 1820 and 1830. The 1840 Census shows he had moved to Clarendon, NY. In 1850 he appeared in both the censuses for both Ohio (Florence Twp, Erie County) and Michigan (Livingston County Michigan) because the timing of the census taking in each state was different and he appeared to be traveling to Michigan at the time. Comfort’s spouses’ names have been recorded as Sara Burdette (his first wife with whom he had eight children) and Abigail Packard (his second wife with whom he had four children). He married Abigail Packard about 1818 in Sherburne, New York. In all probability Sarah his first wife had passed away between 1813-1818. Comfort’s second marriage provided him with a young family but he was 44 years old at the time of that second marriage. By the time his youngest son Uriah was about 14 years old, Comfort was 66 and appears to have “farmed” Uriah out, perhaps as an apprentice, as he appears living with another family in census data. Perhaps this was because Comfort and Abigail were too old to care for him, or perhaps because they knew they were moving to Michigan and didn’t want to uproot Uriah or perhaps Uriah didn’t want to go. In 1845 Comfort and Abigail’s daughter Mary had moved to Michigan with her new husband, Chester Preston. Comfort and Abigail moved west to join them not long after. (Incidentally, this “farming out” of Uriah is consistent with a family letter owned by Cliff Coy recalling a conversation with Uriah telling that as a young man he lived with another family.) Comfort and Abigail were on their way to Michigan in the summer of 1850 and had reached their destination by September. Comfort died 16 months later on May 30, 1852 in Livingston, Michigan. Abigail Packard was born in 1784 in New York state. There is unfortunately no other information available about her.
