Note: Nathaniel is presumed to be the father of William Tanner. William Tanner was received by exam into the First Presbyterian Church of Summit Hill, Pennsylvania and the Panther Valley on 29 Sep 1844. Various records list William's birthplace as County Derry, Northern Ireland. The Summit Hill church was founded by a group from 1st Dunboe Articlave in County Derry, Ireland. There were (and are to this day) Tanners in that area. In addition, William's wife was a McDermott and not only were there McDermott's in this parish but in the same part of the parish as the Tanners. The 1831 census for Dunboe shows a Nathaniel Tannar [sic] living in Ballyhacket Glennahorry and there are 2 males and 3 females in the household. The census also shows a William Tanner in Burrianbeg with 3 males and 2 females in the house. (Burrianbeg and Ballyhacket Glenahorry are basically neighborhoods or fields in the same area and today are considered the same - Castlerock.) My theory is that Nathaniel and his wife (of unknown name) are living with John and his wife Mary Ann. Mary Ann is presumed to be John's wife but may be his mother. They are also living with Nathaniel's daughter Jennet, known from church records. My William is likely the other William listed in the census. By that point he was likely already living separately from his parents with his wife and his first two children - Robert and Jane - who are estimated to be have been born by then (although Jane is really dated as 1832 by my US records). This would be 2 males and two females. My theory for the third male is that he had a first born son named Nathaniel who died before they came to America. They later named their last son (and only child born in the new world) Nathan[iel]. This would be consistent with naming conventions of the time to have named a first son for the father's father. Another possible twist is that the other girl is not Jane, but rather they also had a daughter before Jane - perhaps an Elizabeth, named for her mother - and she also died.
