Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late James J. and Emily (Myshrall) Tanner. He was employed with the Halifax Club and with the Province of Nova Scotia, attorney general's department as a court crier. At the time of his retirement in1972, following 38 years with the Nova Scotia Civil Service, he was deputy registrar of deeds for Halifax County. He was a veteran of World War Two. He served as a sergeant in the Princess Louise Fusiliers (militia). He was a member of the Roman Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, the former Elizabeth Vaters, River Bourgeois, four sons, William, Courtenay, B.C.; Douglas, Middle Sackville; Gerald, Yellowknife, N.W.T; Bernard Halifax; six daughters, Betty (Mrs. Edward Rice), New Glasgow; Helen (Mrs. David Udle), Ben Eoin; Patricia (Mrs. Keith Fougere), Greenwood; Susan (Mrs. Wayne Leslie), Halifax, Linda (Mrs. Anthony Pottie), Lower Sackville; Marilyn, Sydney; two sisters, Anne (Mrs. William Naugler) and Kathleen (Mrs. Ralph Barrett) and a brother, Fred, all of Halifax; 21 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son Ernest Joseph Jr.; four brothers, James, John, William and Edward; three sisters, Helena, Nora and Christina. The body is in Snow's Funeral Home, Halifax. Funeral mass will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Thomas Aquinas Church with burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Family flowers only.
