Note: HOLLAND, Bernard Francis - Born May 28, 1924, in Halifax, he was called home by his God and Creator, Tuesday, April 17, 2001. Resident of Shad Bay, Halifax County since 1948, Bernard was the eldest child of Veronica (Hartry) and George Holland. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Pauline (King); daughters, Veronica, Patsy, Francis (Harold), Victoria, B.C.; Catherine, Cathy Fleet (Wayne), Shad Bay; Audrey, Collette Robertson (Glen), Halifax; sons, Bernard, Tony (Elsie), Shad Bay; Brian (Vicki), Barrington; Bruce (Vicki), Whites Lake; Blair (Christine), Seabright; Brent (Cindy), Shad Bay; 17 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sister, Elizabeth 'Betty Blum (Joe); his friend and brother, Cecil (Janet), Gerard, Jerry (Helen) and Christopher (Laura). He was predeceased by sister, Teresa Collier (James); brother, Paul (Geraldine); daughter, Phyllis (21 months) and an infant baby boy. Prior to joining the Navy, Bernard was a goaltender for St. Mary?s High School, the Halifax City High School champions of 1941. Bernard was an able seaman in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War on board the H.M.C.S Calgary, receiving the 1939-45 Star, Atlantic Star, Africa Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal 1939-45. While in the Navy, he met Pauline King and married her in St. John?s, Nfld. on June 24, 1944. Bernard was a coppersmith at Ship Repair Unit Atlantic ? H.M.C. Dockyard, Halifax, form 1945 until his retirement after 36 years of faithful service in 1981. He was a 25 year plus member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 153, Whites Lake and a fourth degree Knight and charter member of the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Council 10584. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in Snow?s Funeral Home, Windsor Street, Halifax. Bernard will be laid to rest by his loving wife and family after the funeral mass 11 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph?s Roman Catholic Church, Shad Bay. Family flowers only, please.
