Notes
a. Note:   Occupation before enlistment: labourer His Military records state that he enlisted in the Royal Artillery Drivers on 28th August 1798 aged 16, and was stationed at Woolwich. In a letter he wrote to the Lieutenant Governor of Van Diemans Land, William Henry stated that he served at Waterloo in C Troop Royal Horse Artillery under Sir John May and in the Peninsula War as a Quarter Master Sergeant. Available service records state that he was a private for 9yrs 335 days; a Corporal for 214 days and a sergeant for 8yrs 170 days. He was discharged 30th April, 1817 due to being "ruptured". At the time of his discharge he was described as 34 yrs, 5ft 5 inches tall with brown hair, grey eyes and fair complexion. He received a pension of 1/10 a day, reduced to 1/8 a day in 1829. In 1823, William Henry was appointed as pensioned non-commissioned officer to the position of overseer of convicts on the brig 'Jupiter' under Capt. John Park. He was accompanied by his wife and children, arriving in Hobart 6th November, 1823. ATHORNE, William. Per "Jupiter", 1823; Convict Sub-overseer 1823 Nov 23 Re his arrival in Hobart per "Jupiter" (Reel 6056; 4/1765 p.223a) www.records.nsw.gov.au/indexes/colsec/a/F02c_ap-az-07.htm Granted 200 acres of land, he instead took a position with the government and employed as an accountant in the Engineers Dept. at 50 pounds per annum. He was replaced on 25th March, 1825 having been found "incompetent as an accountant for a department of so much trust and importance" [Historical Records of Australia, Series 3 Vol. IV, p.269 - Lieut-Governor George Arthur to Earl Bathurst] He is recorded as having been Superintendent of Carters at the Engineers Dept. until 30th June 1826 [Class C, Blue Book, 1826, p.95]. In 1826 William Henry became the licensee of the 'Kangaroo Inn & Tavern', Liverpool St, Hobart. "It was reported to be a 'low dive', patronized by ex-convicts and hangers-on. No accommodation for man nor beast - drinking house only." [Pubs in Hobart Town from 1807, by David Bryce; p.91] On 25th November, 1826 this was resigned the 'Red Lion Inn & Gardens' and advertised in the Hobart Town Gazette: "The owner of the Red Lion Inn respectfully informs the Gentry and public in general of the Island of Tasmania that he has now completed his establishment for the reception of cattle and also for the reception of horses to stand at Livery or otherwise upon the same terms and conditions as at the Livery Stables in London. Having been many years as an assistant Riding Master in the Royal Artillery at Woolwich and having acquired a skilful veterinary knowledge, he flatters himself that his establishment will be found to be a great acquisition to Hobart Town and its environs and a benefit to gentlemen having valuable horses. The distinguished patronage which William Athorn has already received proves how much this establishment was wanted in this place and calls forth his sincere thanks to the public and to the gentlemen in particular who have so handsomely adopted and recommended it. N.B. - Young horses broken in for the saddle and harness or otherwise and horses for sale are carefully stabled upon moderate terms..." Apparently the stables were at the back of the Inn because William also says "There are good beds, wines and other liquors to be had at the Red Lion....and soup at any hour." In 1829 he is recorded as the licensee of the 'Black Horse', Sandy Bay Road, Sandy Bay between Byron St & the Queens St Bridge. This is regarded as Sandy Bay's first Inn. The land on which it was erected had belonged to William Kermode who had owned the ninety acres between Hampden Road and the Sandy Bay Rivulet. On the Sandy Bay side of this stream was John Beaumont's farm, later Bell's. Very little of this big property was sold before the fifties, but Kermode's land was soon occupied. By the time the road had reached the Queen Street bridge, William had bought a block on the Byron Street side of the stream and there built his Black Horse Inn. Old brick buildings still stand on the site and some of these may be relics of the Inn. On 20th November, 1829 there was trouble over the inn's licence and it was seized by the authorities. After that date no more is heard of the inn, but William owned the block for many years. On the 4th April 1829 William Henry was appointed Pound Keeper of Hobart Town [Hobart Town Gazette]. He resigned from this post on 14th July, 1831 as he was unable to obtain the premises he required for the pound [CSO/1/68/1884]. After this he worked as a currier and tanner CSO/1/489/10813] Licenses to keep a Public House Licensee Index HOBART TOWN GAZETTE 2-10-1834 Hobart town Licensing - Office of Clerk of the Peace.
