Notes
a. Note:   William Alfred Grover, born at Hemel Hempstead, co Herts, 1st December 1810 son of Harry Grover, solicitor and banker and Sibylla (grand daughter of Georg Dionysius Ehret 1708-70 botanic illustrator, Chelsea Physic Garden). Baptised by Rev J. Hamilton D.D. Sponsors Mrs Dickinson, Mrs Pidcock, Mrs Ehret. Inoculated April 1811. Went to Van Dieman's Land in 1832 as Civil Servant. Married Sarah Athorn, daughter of John Athorn 3 Feb 1834 At Trinity Church, Hobart Town by Rev. P. Palmer, Rural Dean. From Family Bible. Sarah Sibylla b. 29 April 1835; James Alfred b. 14 Feb 1837; Frances Charlotte b. 28 Jan 1839. On 27 June 1840 they left on "Emma Prescott" for Hemel Hempstead to stay with William Alfred's brother Charles Ehret Grover, whose wife Susanna wrote to her eight-year-old son Charles Chaplyn Grover, a boarder at Eton College "Uncle Alfred who you have never seen has arrived with his wife and three children at The Bury- so you will find some new relations at Hempstead - he came from Van Dieman's Land which your brother Harry will shew you on the map and they were four months at sea. The Ship which brought them to the Shores of Old England could not get up the Thames because the wind was contrary, so they got out into a Steamer which soon brought them up to LOndon and they slept at Uncle John's house - how very useful these steamers are for they do not want a favourable wind to make them move." More information available from family papers to anyone interested. Stephen Montague Grover was born at Hemel Hempstead during their stay. Charles Chaplyn Grover and Harry Grover followed them back to Australia, arriving in Melbourne in 1851 just before the Gold Rush. Death reference:No. 7956
