Notes
a. Note:   After 12 years at The Narrows, they lived and farmed for two years at Westbourne, five years at Cold Springs (near Lundar) but were for the longest period at Eriksdale. Jon Sigurdson carried the characteristics of the Illugastad family very clearly in so far as being industrious and mentally gifted. He worked hard all his life and enjoyed good health up to the last. Jon died suddenly from a heart attack that struck without warning. He brought an armload of firewood into the kitchen one day, sat down on the chair and died (N. Elfenson). With Jon departed from the scene there disappeared from the Icelandic communtiy an ardent lover of Iceland's heritage. Source: Obituary by Rev. Johann Bjarnason. Jon and Palina were genuine pioneers, homesteading in the Interlake District of Manitoba. In spite of the daily hardships encountered, they undertook the early education of the children. Sometimes they would share the services of a teacher with another family to ensure primary education of their children. Jon farmed at The Narrows for ten years before he found that he didn't have title to the land. He started a new farm at Clear Spring (near Lundar) at the age of 60 years. Jon wrote out his family history - OTTARTALA - from 930 A.D. the time of the Settlement of Iceland. His love of history and good literature was passed on to his children. His daughter, Emma, has written two articles for District Books describing their pioneer life at The Narrows. Source: P. Algeo. "Memories of Pioneer Days" and "Taming a Wilderness" by E.J. E.
