Note: From Sue DeJournett: This from a Wood County Bio's Book. This excerpt submitted by RichardE. Tyson, a grandson. T. M. was born on August 25th, 1864 at Red Hill in Wood County. His mother was the former Susan Ross, a native of Cou ty Down, Ireland and his father, James Dickson, was originally a native of Claysville, Pennsylvania. James died in 1884 and Susan in 1904 and both are bur ied in Red Hill Cemetery. T. M. operated a general store for awhile at Red H ill and later he and Nellie moved into Parkersburg where T. M. was in the ins urance business until his death in 1940, Nellie having preceded him in death in 1930. Both are buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. During their lives in Parke rsburg the family lived for many years at848 Maple Street and in addition to the insurance business, T. M. was active in the Republican Party and a chart er member of the Seventh Street United Brethren Church. The couple had seven children: Clarence, George Ernest, Mamie, Edith, Charles Thomas, and Ruby. Another child, Paul Wesley, died in infancy. ================================== ======== According to granddaughter, Bonnie Conley Werley, T. M. Dickson was a "people person." His job selling Metropolitan Life Insurance was an excelle nt way forhim to make friends with many people. Bonnie relates that T. M. never owned a car, but walked everywhere on foot, or rode the street car to places beyond his walking capacity. "Everyone loved him! There were several folks in Parkersburg who would set an extra place at their dinner table just in case T. M. might stop by, especially after the death of Nellie. This was an embarrassment to his daughters, Mamie and Ruby." Bonnie continued, "T.M. was the Sunday School Superintendent at 7th St. U. B. Church and held many other offices there,as well. He loved music and often played his French Harp during the opening exercises at Sunday School. Many times, he asked me to sing with him for the people. Of course, I did. I would have done ANYTHING for that man!" =========================================================== Written in t he Autograph Book of Nellie Welsh, soon to be the bride of T. M. Dickson to his fri end, Mr. Epler, dated November 13, 1932: "To Mr. A. Epler. Dear Sir and Friend, I was glad to receive a letter again from you. It seemed like old times. I wish I could have a talk with you again and that we could sing a few song s again together. I just (got) back from Salt River. I have found a few Repub licans here since I got back. It seemes as though the Republicans voted the D emocratic ticket this time, but I suppose the Depression and hard times made them do it, but I do hope it will be all for the Best. We will soon have Wine and Beer and perhaps the Saloons again, but we hope if the Democrats makes any improvements in the country this time, it will be the first time for many years. Now Mr Epler, referring to selling those products, they want agents all the time and their products are good, and if a customer buys once they wil l buy again. And the commission is very good. Of course you cannot sell every body because the people really haven't got the money, but you are bound to se ll it if you try because they have got such a varietyof goods, about 350 dif ferent [items] to select from - a good many household necessities that people use every day. I am sending you one of their envelopes so you can write right away. My brother sold the [Zanol?] goods in Akron Ohio and made pretty good at it until he got another job. I wish you success. When you hear from them, write and let me know.
