M. and Nellie Dickson. Three additional siblings, two boys and one girl, wereto be born, but one of the boys died in infancy. During the year of Edith's birth, the "Cakewalk" was a popular dance and Brownie cameras had just been introduced to the American public. The World Exhibibition opened in Paris, France on April 14, just days after she was born. The hamburger was the latest food craze and Coca Cola, already known in the U.S., was introduced in England. Sigmund Freud wrote a book called, "The Interpretation of Dreams" which was his basis for psychoanalysis. A zeppelin airship was launched in Germany that could travel up to 14 miles per hour. William McKinley was President of the United States. As a younster, Aunt Edith taught herself to play the piano. She did it primarily "by ear." In her early years, she loved to play the popular songs of the day and had a good collection of sheet music from the twenties and thirties. Later, she played hymns for her class at church. She was pleased when I ask her to accompany me when I sang for her Sunday School class. My dear Aunt Edith was a beautiful lady. She loved people and liked agood conversation. Her brown hair never truly turned gray, so she tended to have a more youthful appearance than her birth certificate would verify. Edith liked new clothes and always looked nice and in style. When she celebrated her eightieth birthday, someone gave her a shawl as a gift. She put it around her shoulders, but said, "Why did you give me this? Shawls are for old people!" Edith divorced her first husband, John Tyson, who was the father of her two sons, Dick and Jerry. Dick Tyson likes to remember that his parents maintained a good attitude toward each other even after the divorce. Edith's first mother-in-law also remained friendly with her. Dick related that his Dad's mother even baby-sat with he and Jerry when Edith & Jack Helmick married and went away for a wedding trip. Her second husband, Jack, had also been married before. Edith and Jack were a nice couple who adored their only child together, pretty Joyce. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Edith's 10th Birthday Celebration (From the the back cover of the 1910 Diary of her mother, Nellie] "Edith Dickson had birthday party April 9, 1910. Happy Anniversary, Little Sister, and I mean it with all my heart. Twenty-eight years of married life, so perfect from the start. Years of happiness, a little sadness too; But all in all Dear, your dreams have come true. A wonderful Family, a Girl and three Boys Could anybody ask for anything more? A Husband who loves you all through the years. Happiness Always, I wish for you Dear.
