Note: GERALD MARION TYSON, 72, of Huntington, beloved husband and father, died March 22, 2004, in St. Mary’s Medical Center after a long illness.He was born in Parkersburg, W.Va., on March 16, 1932, the son of the late John L. Tyson and the late Edith Dickson Tyson Helmick and his loving stepfather F.V. Helmick. Mr. Tyson was a graduate of Huntington East High School and attended Marshall University. Mr. Tyson was retired from the West Virginia State Department of Highways district officein Huntington. He was a member of the Westmoreland Methodist Church in Huntington and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, serving as a Sergeant with S.A.C. in Alaska. He formerly was the President of the Band Boosters at Vinson High School, and a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed bird watching, the beach and Marshall University sports. Mr. Tyson is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Geneva Marcum Tyson, daughter Gina Kay Karpinski and son-in-law Julian Karpinski and one grandson Christopher Karpinski, and a daughter, Jennifer Lynn Tyson, all of Lexington, Kentucky. In addition, he is also survived by a brother, Richard E. Tyson and sister-in-law, Norma Tyson, of Huntington; a nephew, David R. Tyson, of Huntington; a niece, Patricia Tyson Gebhard of Moon Township, Pennsylvania. He was precededin death by a sister, Edith Joyce Williams and brother-in-law, James Williams, of Ravenswood, West Virginia, and surviving them are two nieces, Mary Beth Williams Harvey of Ravenswood, West Virginia and Aimee Jill Williams Nelson, of Chesapeake, Ohio and a nephew, Daniel Williams of Ravenswood, West Virginia. He is survived by a stepbrother, F.V.Helmick, Jr. and is preceded in death by a stepsister, Hope Helmick Davis and a stepbrother, Byron Helmick. He is also survived by the following sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Marcella Crockett, Marie Herald, Thelma Jean and Fred Sparks, Geneva H. Marcum, Selma Marcum, Mary Jean Marcum Turner, Helen Boggs and many loving nieces and nephews. Hewas surrounded by many wonderful neighbors, friends and church family. Gerald was best know as "Jerry" to his family and many friends and was admired and respected by all who knew him. He will be sorely missed but he fought a courageous fight against overwhelming odds and now he has gone to his eternal rest in Heaven. Friends may call from 6 to9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Reger Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 am Thursday at the Reger Funeral Chapel by Pastor Joe Jarvis. Burial will be in Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington.
