Notes
a. Note:   Levina's death certificate: Died Jan. 30, 1922 in Bridgeport, Harrison, W.Va. Widow, Birth-Feb. 23, 1837, Parents-Nathaniel P________nod, Va. Ellen Heflin, Va. Age, 84 Y 11 M 7 D. Informant F. B. Keslio, Bridgeport. Burial-Feb. l, 1922, Parkersburg, Wood, W.Va. #386 According to Willa Helmick, Livinia mother was a Heflin, Mary or Sarah. Levinia had at least two brothers, Wes & Alfred and two sisters Sarah & Mary. She was the oldest. According to oral history Levinia mother was a maid of honor to LaFayette and it took 6 months to make her dress. During the Revolution her family were Tories. Levinia sold her share of the Virginia and West Virginia farms to her two brothers. Alfred took the Bridgeport farm & Wes the farm in Virginia. He had 2 daughters who never married. Both sides of the family, male & female could read and wr ite so they had some education and they raised tobacco. Lavinia also boasted that her parents were friends of the "Washington's" and that they were related to the "Weatherspoon" who signed the Declaration of Independence. Levina' s family is told about in a letter from her son, Charles William and a letter from her granddaughter, Willa the daughter of Thomas. Willa says "Grandmother said her mother had met Lafayette on one of his visits. The Heflins were Tories, but the Pinchards(Pinkards) were pro American in the Revolutionary War. " In another letter from Willa she says her grandmother, Levinia died when she was about 13. She tells of her grandmother having a colored mammy and a personal maid (black), but after the Civil War she "got right down to the brass tacks and managed very nicely" Her husband's (John R. Helmick) family was pro northern, she still managed a lot of southern names-like Lee for the middle names for her daughters and my fathers named for Stonewall Jackson. Willa goes on to say she can still here her uncles arguing about the War. Levinia claimed to be related to John Witherspoon, one of the Signersof the Declaration of Independence. She told of La Fayette's second visit to this country and t hey helda big reception for him in their neighborhood. To finance it and to have the honor of being host, the planters put in a large spool of tpbacco andhad a five mile horse race, winner to get the tobacco and sell it to pay for the expenses of the reception. No one remembers who won, a Pinkard or a Heflin, but Elinor Heflin blew her top at LaFayette as he shook her hands and said, "I saved ye from the grubbing hoe and gave ye liberty" as written by Charles William Helmick tp NOTE CORRECT SPELLING IS LEVENIA PER HER DEATH CERTIFICATE TP 1860 United States Federal Census Record about John Helwick Name: John Helwick Age in 1860: 30 Birthplace: Virginia Home in 1860: Not Stated, Harrison, Virginia Gender: Male Head of Household: John Helwick Household Post Office: Clarksburg Value of real estate: View image laborer Lavenia 23 Martha A 3 Florence E 1 Individual Record 1880 United States Census Serina E.
