Helmick is Carl Howard Helmick's Great-grandfather, D.G. Helmick is his Granduncle. "In 1841 the Rev. John Clark was appointed pastor of the Middletown Circuit and J.D. Garmow was assistant. The circuit then consisted of fifteen organized classes and five other preaching places, making twentyappointments in all. During this year an appointment was established at the home of Jacob Swisher at New Port (now known as Catawba). In warm weather Rev. Clark preached out of doors, standing on a large rock near the river bank. Afterward an old schoolhouse was used, and in 1848 Rev. Samuel Clawson had a wonderful revival here. The Swishers, Summerses, Hauns, Wilsons and Jolliffs were among the first members at Catawba. The first church was build in 1854. Because of it's crude structure, this building gave way to the present (1980) commodious structure that was build in 1892. The Swisher, Haun and Summers families are still represented in the membership of the Catawba Church. Rev. D. G. Helmick was pastor when the present church was built." The above article was taken from a 1926 area church history compile by Rev. Isaac A. Barnes, one of our former ministers. OLD CIRCUIT For many years the Catawba Charge was made up of the following churches: Winfield, Montana, Walnut Grove (Union), Hopewell, The Old Salem Church (near 5-Forks) & Catawba. Other early preaching appointments on this charge included: Hampton's Valley, Opekiska, Levels, Smithtown, Colfax, Brier Hill, Mt. Calvary, Pleasant Valley & Williams School. Daniel Ryan Helmick ( full version) Categories: Historical Family Information Transcribed from "The Methodist Protestant Church in West Virginia" pages 32-34 by Rev. I. A. Barnes, The Stockton Press, Baltimore, Md. 1926. One of the distinguished sons of Mt. Gilead Church was Daniel R. Helmick, who was converted in 1837, at the age of 32 years, and united with the church at Mt. Gilead. He soon became active in the work of the church, and being gifted in speech, he was licensed to exhort, and wasquite successful in winning souls to Christ. In 1839 he was licensed to preach the gospel, and believing that the Lord had called him to the work of the ministry, he leased his farm and made preparation to enter upon his sacred calling. Having married Miss Mary McNemar in 1828,he now had a family of several children, but he was received into thePittsburgh conference in 1840, and continued in active service for 31years. Although modest and unpretentious, he was a man of deep piety and unquestioned loyalty and integrity, and he soon became a leader among the ministers of the conference; and served some of the most important charges of the conference. When the West Virginia conference was organized in 1854, he became one of the charter members and at the first regular session of the conference, was elected to the presidency. He was reelected again in 1860 and also in 1861. Some time before his death he told the writer that, he had taken more than one thousand members into the Methodist Protestant Church, and many more had been converted at his meetings. Dr. George Westfall, in his obituary of father Helmick says that, “His style of preaching was textual rather than topical, and he would impress you as being a living encyclopedia of Biblical and theological knowledge. He began calm and deliberate, but as hewent on became eloquent and oftimes even powerful in his discourses.” Brother Helmick had a family of 15 children, and yet he never received a salary exceeding $500. All of these children, except one, became members of the Methodist Protestant Church, and that one died in the Christian faith. His farm was sold and the proceeds consumed in the support of his family while he preached without receiving an adequate support. But the following verses composed by his son Clark, indicate howhis children estimate the inheritance he left them. “But father looked forth on the harvest, Upon fields that were already white, And laborers being few, he enlisted, To glean for the kingdom of light. And the farm and the cot, by the wildwood, E’en the fields where the wild flowers spring, Passed out of his hands in my childhood, An offering to Jesus his King. Though no houses or lands could he give me, Not one acre of wildwood or sod, Yet a far richer portion he wills me, ‘Tis the smiles of my father’s God.” 1860 United States Federal Census Record about Mary Helmrich Name: Mary Helmrich Age in 1860: 48 Birthplace: Virginia Home in 1860: District 3, Monongalia, Virginia Gender: Female Head of Household: Danl r Helmrich Household Post Office: Stewartstown Value of real estate: View image Danl r Helmrich Meth Prot Clergy rev 800 rv 300 b VA Mary 48 b VA Elizabeth 17 VA Daniel S 15 Mary 13 Albert G 10 Virginia I 7 Franklin C 5 HELMICK, DANIEL R. On February 8th, 1812 he married Mary McNemar. They Had fifteen children. Daniel was a minister of the Methodist church and aschool teacher as well. When his mother died, his father remarried to Mary Ann Hacker the 2nd. This makes Daniel a step uncle.! The legend around Lewis County agrees that Uncle Daniel had no time for sin, or sinners. You can tell that by the number of kids he had. He preached a very forceful sermon. He carried his bible in one hand and a trace chain in the other. He would walk up and down the aisle of the church, if he spotted a sinner, would fall him out. There were only two choices, repent, or get worked over by that trace chain. Some of the old Gizzies around Weston still swear by this. They remember Uncle Daniel very well. Decedents of Uncle Daniel still live around Fairmont and own Helmick's Foundry and Iron Works.
