"Paul Edward Wise of Vancouver, WA has died of stroke and age-relatedcauses at age 83. Paul was born in Parkersburg, WVA on December 11, 1918 to William Luther and Iva Helmick Wise. Paul attended Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio for two years where he studied science, and played football and boxed. He then joined the Civilian Conservation Corps(CCC.) He spent his CCC year building park structures in National Parks and stringing phone lines across the vast reaches of Nevada and Utah. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps, January 8, 1941 in Ft. Hays, Ohio. He served during WWII in Panama where duty took him to both sides of the canal zone and the Galapagos Islands. He contracted amoebic dysentery and was hospitalized with the illness for a year. He refused a disability discharge and finished his tour of duty with the rank of Technical Sergeant. After returning to the United States he was stationed near Denver where he met and married Dorothy Kathleen Nicholson, August 24, 1944. They moved to Bishop, California where Paul provided the direction for the maintenance and equipment of structures at McClelland Air Field in the beautiful Owens Valley and was discharged from active duty, October 22, 1945. Paul enlisted in the Army National Guardof Colorado in Denver, April 26, 1948 and was honorably discharged April 25, 1952 with the official comment, "Service Honest and Faithful."During his period of service he earned the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Medal, American Theatre Medal with one bronze star and the Pacific Theatre Medal with one bronze star. Paul used the GI Bill to attend dry cleaning school in Silver Spring,Md. Returning to Colorado after his certification he worked for Colorado Lace learning the trade until he purchased his own dry cleaning shop. He also substituted as a "temp" for the Postal Transportation Service (PTS) sorting mail in rail cars and making pick ups "on the fly" and eventually got regular employment, first at the PTS at the Denver Union Station and then at the Terminal Annex where he retired from his USPS career in 1984. In the early days of his life in Denver, Paul also worked carrying hod for bricklayers and sold party favors and novelties for Ellswoods, Inc. of Denver. Paul always carried a car trunk full of balloons and helium for weekend displays and later partnered with Harry Ellswood for several years. Paul and Dorothy adopted two children, Douglas William in 1948 and Margaret Kathleen in 1954 whom they raised with love and a profound value for reading and education. Paul joined the Masons in 1949. Most of his 54 years with that organization were spent as a 32 degree Mason and he entered the El Jebel Temple of the Shrine in 1984. He also supported and belonged to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), the Elks Lodge and the Moose Lodge. After his divorce from Dorothy in 1975, Paul met and married Geraldine Bishop Roberts in 1975. He and Geri traveled extensively throughoutEurope, Hawaii and the Caribbean. After retirement they moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where volunteer work and a part time job filled his time. In 1989 they moved to Vancouver, Washington where he served on the Vancouver Public Library Board and volunteered at Southwest Washington Regional Medical Center. Paul suffered a stroke February 17, 1998 at home in Vancouver, WA. For the next four years he was cared for at Cascade Park Care Center inVancouver. During his time there he lived a challenging life with uncomplaining courage and acceptance. He is survived by his wife Geri Wise of Vancouver, WA and children Peggy and Valery Petrochenkov of Triangle, VA., Doug and Cindy Wise of Springfield, OR, step son Reid Roberts of Denver, CO and four grandchildren, Brian Wise of Seattle, WA., Kendra Wise and her husband Miguel Hallof Santa Barbara, CA., and Katya Petrochenkov and Grisha Petrochenkovof Triangle, VA. Memorial donations may be made to a local library."
