Note: [George Bailey.FTW] Ancestral File Number:<AFN> 836P-CV Henry Horton Bellevil le & Russell Ward Bellville corresponded about 1905 and 1906. They were in c ontact at that time with Nicholas Bellvile's son, Joseph then in Marysville, Ohio and elsewhere with John Belvillein Wheeling, West Virginia. They had h eard from Cornelius Belveal but thought he had lived in Philadelphia, Ohio T hey write rather that James came from Knox Co., Ohio (which is wrong) They p icked up a report of Belville's in Cincinnati and of a Charles in Xenia, Ohio (unknown to PBT). They knew of Belville's from New York State, and of those in Detroit, Michigan and from Canada, and wrote them off as of unknown rel ation. They enlisted the services of one Dr. Hylande MacGrath, of Detroit, c apable and I believe, conscientious genealogist. He attempted to find the ro ots of the Bellvilles in France and came up with a scattering of names. He f ound the coat of arms of the six Belleville families that are in Rietstap and the Belleville reference in Burke. He secured from Henry Horton the certified list of children of James which has been noted. He wrote to Lavinia Deemer a letter which asked all the right questions, but to which Lavinia could only reply that she did not know. He accurately inferred from his general knowle dge of history that we were Huguenot, and himself Catholic, lamented the schi sm. Dr. McGrath, prepared a family tree, in chart form, several copies of wh ich have been reported at one time or another, but none is now to be found. I am sure that the chart was ornamented with the Coat of Arms and perhaps an imaginary ancestry was supplied, going back to Charles VI of France and Levi of the Twelve Tribes--Belleville, very plain. When later members of the fami ly reported such ancestry, they seemed to have gotten their information from this chart. I regret that I can confirm none of this. For an eye witness ac count of it see Mrs. Cecile (Belville) Glover, in Washington Co., Iowa. Alon g with the family tree, these Belleville's became obsessed with the notion th at there was an inheritance awaiting them (not the one discussed under Emily Bellville) James Henry wrote.(This would have been the Anneke Jans Inheritanc e they referred to. They believed to descend from Anneke Jans, whom they fel t was the daughter of William of Orange and that there was millions of dollar s in gold in a bank waiting for them tp). I have heard my Father say, and som e of his brothers too, that therewas a large estate left in Philadelphia, Pa ., by two bachelor brothers by the name of Belleville and they died leaving t heir property without making a will. But there seems to be some parties mixe d up with us by the name of Hedges. I heard Father speak of the Hedges too, but with what connection I have forgotten. I thought maybe the Hedges might be connected withour Great Grandmother Polly Kirk's side of the house. My c ousin Henry Horton Belleville, son of Uncle William Belleville and a lawyer w ho is interested in the matter are going to Philadelphia after the holidays ( New Year 1906) and give it a thorough examination." In Aug 1906 Henry wrote to Daniel Griffin Belville. You ask me how I was getting along with the Philadel phia Estate of the Belleville's. Well I think I am getting along first rate, that is, in getting information. I think I have told you about finding the descandents of John Bellville in Wheeling, West Virginia. John was a broth et (?) of great Grandfather Nicholas Bellville and this brother, Cornelius Be llville was a bachalor, and I am sure that he was the one that left the Estat e, for he died in the year 1844 (Cornelius C died before 1840) and my Grandfa ther (James) started down there in 1852 to see about it. That is what they wrote. I wash my hands of any part in the story.
