Notes
a. Note:   [George Bailey.FTW] Ancestral File Number:<AFN> 3CBG-86 He is in every Census in Wood County from 1830 - 1860. In 1860, three married sons are in row beside him. From a book on the Belveal's Chapter 23, Wood County, Ohio N6 "The f amily at first is definitely attached to the town of Perrysburg (the Fort Mei gs of an earlier day.) Eight of them are buried there in fort Meigs cemetery . the epidemic of cholera which raged in Perrysburg in 1854 seems to have ta ken toll of Bellville's. as well as of the general populations to Russell War d Belleville, James hunted & trapped on the Ewing island in the Maumee River opposite Perrysburg. After the Census of 1830 James is found on his farm in Perrysburg township. His land lay five or six miles southeast of the town, r eached via McCutchonville Pike (present day RT 23) near the hamlet of Dowling . It occupied 40 acres, which would comprise about an entire section. It included the low hummock of yellow sand (glacial) all known as Belleville Rid ge in the southeast corner of Sec 33. It was a ridge that afforded the only dry spot around when James arrived. All the surrounding area was swamp, the notorious Black Swamp of Wood County, which troops foundered in the War of 18 12. James must also have owned some land to the south of Section 33, since t he land was dedicated for the Old Cemetery which lies just outside the southe rn boundary of that section. The log house that Hames built stood 20 to 30 rod s to the east of this cemetery on Dowling Rd., still on the dry sand and bare ly within Section 33 or perhaps even without. One census actually puts James in Webster Township rather than in Perrysburg. When James took possession, the land was virgin forest of hardwood. His first task was to clear and drai n it before a crop could be grown. He was remembered as a notable rail split ter. Rails were one use to which the felled timber could be put. They went into snake fences, built without nails. The black soil after cleared was ver y productive. James is credited with building the four mile stretch of pike fr om Perrysburg Five Points. Besides the giving of the land for the Belleville Ridge Methodist Church and for the New Belleville Ridge Cemetery beside it. As time went on he built up a herd of cattle and laid out an orchard. He died on his farm. His monument in old Belleville Cemetery reads: JAMES BELLEVIL LE, DIED OCTOBER 19, 1861, AGED 76 Y, 10 M. 28 D IF A MAN DIE,SHALL HE LIVE AG AIN? ELIZA BELLEVILLE, DIED JANUARY 21, 1866, AGED 55 Y (second wife of James) Dates on the front are from the Bible in the possession of Lavinia Belvill e Deemer in 1905. The monument has been accepted by the family as someone doin g the arithmetic incorrectly.
