Notes
a. Note:   Alias:<ALIA> Turkey Run /Bill/ Notes taken from The Heflin Genealogical Collec tion II by Dr. Bruce Morgan Heflin 1998. Page 436 and 7. The notes provided by Edith Heflin stated that her was called "TurkeyRun Bill" as his farm was located on Turkey Run. He could not sign his name but he left a large estate. Donald L. Heflin referred to a letter he has which was dated 1919. The name of the bride, groom and the date of their marriage was notedin the Fauquier Ct., Va. Marriage Bonds 1759-1854. They were married by William Fristoe. The Fauquier Marriage Records, II, page 246 list William Heflin and William Hick erson, Jr. as being on William and Elizabeth's marriage bond. William Hickerson, Sr. gave consent to his daughter, Elizabeth to marry William. William and Lucy were also listed in the 1820 Census of Fauquier, Va. This family was ag ain listed in the 1830, 40, and 50 census for Fauquier, Va. 1850 United States Federal Census William Heflin In Virginia Name: Heflin, William Age: 63 Year: 1850 County: Stafford Township: Unknown Townships State: Virginia Birth State: VA Cause of Death: LIVERINFLAM Page: 0 Month: SEP His Will was dated March 13, 1858. William Heflin and Lawrence Butler were on bond for William and Lucy's marriage. The information about William, his wives and children came from the information provided by Edith Heflin an d Tim Krey. The nickname of Turkey Run came from the notes of Margaret Heflin Gentges and Ann Johnson. Mrs. "Sis" Burgess of Hurleytown, who was the daugh ter of John R. Heflin and Susan Butler, said that "Turkey Run Bill Heflin" ma rried Lucy Briscoe. The notes, dated 1933, made by Joseph Clarence Heflin of R uby, Va. state emphatically that Morris Schwab said "Turkey Run" William Hefl in married Lucy Briscoe. The Fauquier Ct., Va. Vital Statistic Records mention William Heflin who died in Fauquier City, in March of 1858. His death was reported b y his son, William H. Heflin, William's son. Tim Krey told me he has been to the cemetery where William is buried. He indicated it still had and iron fence in 1997, though it had fallen down. All the graves were unmarked. Dr. Marion Heflin found that Turkey Run was a plantation house that belonged to the Butlers. It is located a few miles South of Warrentonin Fauquier Ct. The pla ntation was burned by a Yankee raiding party. The cause of his death was liste d as "Old Age." Mr. Marion Heflin said that he died from an infected carbuncle in his neck when he was 80 years old. ABOVE NOTES FROM EDWARD ADAMS FAMILY FILE William was a farmer. William's daughter Martha 'Patsy' Heflin m. Albert THAYER. In the name of God, Amen - I William Hefflin of Fauquier C ounty in the State of Virginia do make & publish this as my last will & testa ment being at the time of sound mind & memory - Imprimis - I devise and beq ueath to my Executor herein after named all of my property real & personally to be sold upon reasonable and fair terms for the 1810 United States Federal Census William Name: Hefflin, William County: Fauquier State: Virginia Year: 1810 Roll: M252_68 Page: 242 Image: 464 William (James) Hefferlin was the s/o John Hefferlin (RW Soldier). Hewas erroneously identified as William Lawson Heflin by an early researcher that assigned middle names in an effort to keep all of the William’s, James’, & John’s straight in his mind. William James Heflin wasa farmer and resided in Fauquier Co., VA all of his life. During his lifetime he acquired a considerable estate. The farm on which he livedconsisted of 569 acres and was located about three miles southeast ofthe center of Warrenton. He owned an additional 205 acres in the Southern part of the county upon which his son, George Washington Heflin, lived. In 1855 his farm was valued at $6 per acre and the second tractat $4 per acre. He owned at least three slaves in 1810 and owned ten by 1850, males aged 40, 20, 4, 4, 3, and 2, and females aged 25, 22, 6, and 2. In 1849 his daughter Ellen Pinckard intended to move West and desired to return to her father the slave Harriot and her increase in exchange for the slave Norah whom Ellen wished to take West. William Heflin transferred title to Norah to his son Lawson A. Heflin, in trust for Ellen, and directed that Norah be considered an advancement of his estate of the value of $600. Although Meg Gentes indicates that Lucy E. Briscoe was born in Calvert, MD, I think this is erroneous and I think that she was born in Westmoreland, VA. I know that William James Hefferlin was born in Fauquier Co., VA, butI don't think that it was in Orlean (These were cousins) as the John Hefferlin Sr. family was in Southern Fauquier Co. ranging from Goldvein to Remington to Warrenton and then into Culpeper and Rappahannock In the name of God, Amen - I William Hefflin of Fauquier County in the State of Virginia do make & publish this as my last will & testament being at the time of sound mind & memory - Imprimis - I devise and bequeath to my Executor herein after named all of my property real & personally to be sold upon reasonable and fair terms for the purposes herein after provided, viz- 1st I desire that all of my debts & funeral expenses be immediately paid after my decease- 2nd I require that each one of my children and Grandchildren shall account for such property as they may have received from me or my estate, and that in the division hereinafter provided the amount received by each shall be deducted from the share they would otherwise receive- 3rd I desire that the proceeds of my entire estate shall be equally divided amongst any living childrens and grand children, my grand Children however to have in this division the shares which their parents would have taken if living - 4th The shares which my children Elizabeth DAVIS, Patsy THAYER, EllenPINKARD will take I expressly will and desire shall be secured against the debt & be held entirely free from the control & management of their husbands during their lives and upon their death shall be equallydivided amonst their surviving children except that in the case of Patsy Thayer's death I will & desire that her share shall only be divided amongst the survivors at the time of her death of the following children vis: James Thayer, George W. Thayer, Frank Thayer, Lucy F. Thayer, Mittie Thayer, and Buchanan Thayer - and to effect the prupose herein ex . . . I direct that my Executor shall hold as trustee the property herein conveyed to my daughters & their children either in money or invested in land or other property as he may think advisable - 5th I except from the devise to my executor the ground no used by me as a graveyard, desiring on fourth part of an acre to be set apart & kept for a burying place for my children and grandchildren. 6th I hereby constitute and appoint William H. INTENT TO MARRY PARENTS BONDSMAN 133 Lawson A. Heflin William Heflin Jr. William Heflin Jr. Ann Eliza Heflin William Heflin Sr. William Heflin Sr. Bondsmen were Lawson A. Heflin, William Heflin Jr., and William Heflin Sr. The marriage document identifies Lawson A. Heflin as the son ofWilliam Heflin Jr. and Miss Ann Eliza Heflin as the daughter of William Heflin Sr. A lot of the early Heflin researchers have proliferated the interpretation of this marriage bond as William Heflin Jr. also, being the son of William Heflin Sr. This misinterpretation was further compounded when an early researcher assigned the middle name of Lawsonto William Heflin Jr. The assignment of middle names by this researcher was common place for this researcher and he did so to help him keep all of the William's, James', and John's straight in his own mind. Unfortunately, a lot of these middle names have also been proliferatedby subsequent researchers. In fact, the William Heflin Jr. here is the son of John Hefferlin (VA Revolutionary War Soldier) and his middlename was James. The William Heflin Sr. here (German Line) is really William Heflin Jr. (who married first Susannah Sukey Ellis and second Elizabeth Payne) the son of William Hefling Sr. and Margaret Nancy Haddox. This misinterpretation was made because of the common day interpretation of Jr. being the son of a Sr. with the same given names. I the olden days it was common practice to identify two individuals with the same given name by attaching the Jr. to the younger of the two, and Sr. to the elder regardless of whether or not they are related. In the above case, the William Heflin Jr. was born on 20 August 1777 and the William Heflin Sr. was born on 7 Mar 1740 and were of different lineage. The identification of the parents of Lawson A. Heflin and Ann Eliza Heflin is supported by analysis of the Fauquier Co. Personal Property Tax Lists with the German Line being located in NW Fauquier Co. and theIrish Line being located in Southern Fauquier Co., VA. 10. Fauquier Co.
