When my Uncle Dick & Uncle John were ol d enough to work, he got them jobs at the Mill. Uncle Dick worked in the Mil l until his health (heart problems) forced him to quit. Uncle John went to w orkin an office and eventually worked with my Dad at G.F.C. Finance Co. E veryone should have an Uncle Dick in their lives. He was funny, loving and c aring. He was artistic. When they moved into the Valade house, only blocks from our home, he started a mural on his son Ric's walls. It was a forest an d it wrapped around every wall. It was wonderful. He spent years working on it. Of course, he wasn't perfect, and once after arguing with my Aunt Jeane tte, she won the argument in the long run, because when he went to sleep, she painted over it! He was a Dr. Doolittle as well. If he found a sick or inj ured animal he brought it home with him. Once they had a duck that walked ar ound the house ina diaper. When I was 13 we moved from Michigan to Californ ia. The next time Isaw Uncle Dick he had an Irish brogue. My Aunt Esh tell s it the best way..."Dick was in the hospital and I went to visit him. Passe d a lady in the hall that I knew. We stopped and chatted and in passing she inquired who I was there to see. I told her, my brother, Dick Spillane. T he lady answered, : "I know Dick, but he has such a heavy Irish accent, what happened to yours? and she said, I worked very hard on losing itand he didn' t." We were at Uncle Dick's alot, or they were at our house. When we were t ogether, we often would push the furniture aside and dance. Uncle Dick was a wonderful dancer. We would waltz, or polka. Grown-ups and kids. He loved to travel and did so, often spur of the moment. While the Mill was on strike o nce, he put the family in a car to go for a ride. They ended up in Californ ia and even went to Tijuana. My Mom was so worried about them, and then we g ot a post card. Typical Uncle Dick. I wasn't around when he and my Aunt Jeane tte divorced. I have no idea why. I love them both. I never met their last son Matthew. I nevermet his second wife or their son, John. He was a shor t man, tall in story and heart.
