Note: Mark was a long-time staunch member of the Genealogical Society of South Africa. He was born in 1922 in Rowsham, near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, one of the very scenic areas in England. He started his career in a bank there after leaving school in 1939. He joined the army at the outbreak of the war, and saw service in various theatres in the Middle East, India and Italy. After his demobilisation he rejoined the bank, was transferred to Zambia and later Zimbabwe. He came to South Africa in 1970, and retired from the bank as General Manager in 1982. Over the years he gave many talks to members of other societies and wrote numerous articles for the Family Tree magazine, of which he was the South African representative, as also the South African adviser for the International Society for British Genealogy and Family History. In 1985 he was elected a committee member of the Transvaal branch of the GSSA, and later a member of the National Council. He founded the West Rand Family History Society and joined the West Gauteng branch at its establishment in 2001, and became an honorary member. He contributed extensively to Familia, received a Lifetime Achievement Award of the GSSA in 1995, and was elected a Fellow the following year. Note: Mark, Marcus m. These names are probably derived from Mars, the Roman god of war, and were used as Roman fmily and personal names. Although it occurs from the Middle Ages in Britain, Mark, the modern form of the name, has only become common since the 1950s. The French forms Marc and Marcel, the latter derived from the Latin diminutive of the name, Marcellus, are also used in Britain today.
