a. Note:   . A sod house had been built by their own hands. The fertile soil, in answer to their touch, had given them of its first fruits and acres of potatoes, melons, and garden vegetables, were flourishing in the rich soil. their plans so carefully laid as lovers were just beginning to be realized when the blow came. On Sunday, before his death on Saturday, he entertained a number of young people at his home, singing and spending the day visiting, and was apparently in good health. on Monday he was compelled to take to his bed., never to get up again. (From his obituary in the Port Bryon Globe, Port Byron, Illinois.)

Note:   Together the young couple started on their bridal trip to the west where they had laid so many plans for the home they expected to make in that country. They were living on their 640 acre homestead
