High school interests included music, and he played both the cornet and banjo. In the Army he served as a Surgical Technician 861, training at Fitzsimons. He ended his stint at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He served as a Private First Class, serial number RA16166083. His units were the 9901st TSU-SGO Detachment and the 7031st ASU Separation Detachment. His discharge record indicates that he received a WWII Victory medal. After the Army, he attended mortuary school in Fresno, California, but did not complete his studies there. Instead, he entered Michigan State College in East Lansing, Michigan. He graduated from Michigan State in 1952 with a B.S. in Zoology. Cliff then attended the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri. While there he met his future wife, Roberta "Patsy" Walter, who was working at the college's hospital as a nurse's aide. Engaged in August of 1955, they married at Kirksville on October 1, 1955. Cliff completed his studies at Kirksville in 1956. Following graduation, Dr. Stanley served his internship at Muskegon Hospital. In 1957, he and Pat settled in Battle Creek, Michigan, where he opened his family practice at 1409 West Michigan Avenue in the Urbandale neighborhood. Cliff was on staff at the former Lakeview General Osteopathic Hospital (closed in the late 1980s), as a surgeon. He served at various times as Chief of Staff. From 1957 to 1960, Cliff and Pat resided in the small apartment above his medical office, where Pamela Sue and Tami Lou were born. In 1960, they purchased a home at 155 Leonard Drive in the Bedford Township section of Battle Creek. It was there that Todd Alan and Debra Lynn were born. The 1960s were spent building his successful family practice and raising his family.
