Notes
a. Note:   James Stephen Stanley appears in the 1880 US Census as the 13 year old English-born son of James Stanley and Annie (Cooper) Stanley.
In the 1900 US Census, a Stephen Stanley is residing in Colfax Township of Benzie County, MI, with his wife of six years Anna L. and their one year old son, who is incorrectly listed as "George" (should be Glen). Stephen and his parents are listed as having been born in England. Anna L. and her father were born in Michigan, and her mother was born in Wisconsin. Stephen's age and birth year are incorrectly listed as 29 and 1878, respectively, His immigration year is also incorrectly listed as 1877 (possible confusion with year of naturalization ?). However, based on the household description and the correct birthplaces for Stephen, Anna L. and their parents, this household is that of James Stephen Stanley. There are also two boarders listed in the household, a William (or Wilbur) Robbins and a James Henry, both around the age of 25. The Stanleys lived in a farmhouse that they owned. The farm schedule number is not listed, but falls between 74 and 80.
The 1910 US Census shows the English-born Stephen Stanley residing in Norwich Township of Missaukee County, with his second wife May Bell, a 12 year old son named Glenn, a son William, age 4, and a daughter Frances, age 2. At this point he has been remarried for 5 years. He is a foreman at a lumber company. His immigration year is shown as 1874, which matches that of his father James from the 1900 Census. His age is reported as 38, which is inconsistent with the 1880 census data (he should have been 43 in 1910 if he was 13 in 1880).
James Stephen passed away on April 10, 1918. His death took place in Grawn, MI. His occupation is listed as farmer on his death certificate. There is no grave marker at his burial site. May Bell had to default on the mortgage on their property, and could probably not afford to place a stone.
His 1910 household (with the exception of Glen) resided in 1920 with May Bell's second husband, Frank Hays, in Cadillac, MI.
