Note: Anna L. Smith first appears in the 1880 US Census as the five year-old daughter of Harmon B. Smith and his wife Mary J. Smith. In that year, she had four brothers and sisters. She was the third of five children. Harmon and Mary Jane later added four more children to their household. In the 1900 US Census, Anna L. is the 25 year-old wife of Stephen Stanley and the mother of one year-old Glen (who is incorrectly listed as "George"). The census records that she gave birth to three children, but that only one survived. Her birth date is listed as September 1874, but there is no record on file with the State of Michigan (per letter dated 11/10/99). Her father's Civil War pension claim papers consistently list her birthdate as September 19, 1875. The last known record of Anna L. Stanley is an appearance before the County Clerk in Newaygo County, MI on May 20, 1902 for the sale of their land in Lincoln Township to Citizens State Bank. The State of Michigan has been unable to locate a death record for her in the state archives. A note in the family bible of a grandneice states that she passed away in September 1904.
