Notes
a. Note:   6, that his uncle Branch Tate was named after his mother. She also stated that his father DeWitt Clinton Tate's mother's maiden name was Martha Branch, that she was English and Irish descent, and that his grandmothers name was Laura BARTLETT. Martha BRANCH died before 1844 when Joseph Lawrence Tate married Martha BARTLETT, and DeWitt Clinton Tate was 7 years old when this 2nd marriage took place. It is very possible that John and Laura BARTLETT were the only grandparents he remembered. It is also possible that he never knew any other grandparents. See notes for husband, Joseph Lawrence Tate. Howard Tate (son of Edwin Franklin Tate, 5th child of DeWitt Clinton Tate, son of Martha Branch and Joseph Lawrence Tate) stated emphatically many times, "My mother told me that my grandmother's name was Martha Branch." Birth place is taken from 1900 census record of daughter, Martha Jane Tate McGee. Also see mother's birthplace on the 1880 Federal Census for Bullion City, Utah, DeWitt Clinton Tate, which is listed as "Verginia" [sic]. Family genealogy book: Benjamin H.
