Note: Robert was born on a farm near the Canadian border. He had to quit school in 1818, at age 14, to work on the farm due to the influenza epidemic. He never went back to school, but had such a love of reading and learning that he became a very well-educated person. His family moved from Derby to Braddford, Vermont, when his father got a job as operator of the town's hydroelectric plant. Bernice was the youngest of twelve children. She was born in Topsham, in the hills above Bradford. She was employed as a school teacher when she and Robert met. Robert worked for Mr. J. D. Hale, who owned a furniture store and funeral parlor, in the 1920s. Robert worked there until he and his co-worker, Vincent Polli, bought the business in the 1940s. Robert and Bernice bought a house in 1929. Robert lived there until his ddeath in 1990. Bernice was born with a weak heart. She was told that having a child would probably kill her. But she and Robert had Carolyn in 1927. Bernice lived until 1945. At the age of 40, she died suddenly of a heart attack, in her kitchen in the arms of her 18-year-old daughter carolyn. Robert remarried in 1946. He retired in 1969. he was long a justice of the peace, and often commented that he had married many women! He was a Mason for much of his adult life, and took an active role in the lodge activities. He was an avid golfer, and kept up this activity until his health failed. he loved to travel, and went all over the eastern part of the country. he had a strong interest in history, and was the town historian for a while. he was also very interested in the Judd family genealogy. He died of cancer in 1990, after battling it for several years.
