" (ie: surprise. surprise) Philosophy: About a Team of Horses - Analogy to a poor worker One was willing to work, the other was willing to let him. Applied this to persons he met in life. Humour: While out hunting in a remote area North of Dauphin. Would stop and ask a local farmer if he was on the right road to Winnipeg? "Oh No Mister, you must go etc.,etc" was the usually reply. Musical Ability: During the late 1920's he had his own orchestra, called the Dauphin Orchestra I believe. Members included two Cox brothers, Jack McMurray & others. Dad played the saxophone. Mother attended the GIGS when they were courting. Favorite Past Times: Horses: As a young man was quite proficient in horse back riding, roping including twirling a lariet. Was the Dauphin Parade Marshal astride a horse, wearing a cape & cape, much like the movie star "ZORRO." Hunting: Ducks, Geese and White Tail Deer (Jumpers) Guided for hunters from Madison, WI. USA Stan Johnson; Woody Bissell - Gisholt Machine Works Bernie Mautz - Mautz Paints Dr. Jerry Coe etc. for many years. Stan & Woody killed in a vehicle accident at St.Rose Man Abt 1961-62 on the way to Dauphin. Visited with us at our home on Golding Ave. Winnipeg just hours before. Black Lab the only survivor. "Tar" was taken care of by uncle Fred Bawden. I (TAW) have Stan's hunting binoculars. Dad was an expert on using Duck, Geese & Crow calls. Fishing: Pickeral(Walleye to Americans) guided for fisherman mainly from the Dakota's. Curling: Was a Charter member of the Dauphin Curling Club. Initially owned his own set of Curling Rocks. Service Club: Was a Charter member of the Dauphin Lions Club. Teacher: Taught Pudge & I good hunting safety while using a 12 gauge Winchester Pump; Winchester 30/30 rifle or a Winchester .22 rifle. Driving Lessons: Family car was a 1938 De Sota with Overdrive. Would that car ever go, like sixty(60) mph. An expression no longer viable since Canada adopted the Metric System and Kilometers. Retirement: While in Penticton: Dad worked at a Shell Gas Station on Government Rd. ?? Motel as desk clerk School Maintenance Custodian.
