Notes
a. Note:   Who are his parents? No one in the family every told who his parents were or his relatives.
His wife, Susan McConnell Welch, said he came from a well to do family, and would say and laugh "That his family disowned him because he married a mill hill girl". Lester Welch (John W. Welch's son) said that he told John W. Welch to get ready on a Saturday (around early 1930's) and that he would take him back to where he came from. When Lester got there he was not ready, and Lester reminded him of their plans, and John W. Welch said "I didn't go see them while they were living and I ain't going to go now that they are dead." Susan said that John W. Welch left for several days and when he got back he said that he had been to look for his family and that they had died or moved away. That was around 1938, when John W. became ill. Some thought he went on the Greyhound Bus but some think he drove the A-Model Ford roadster. That was just before he got sick. Susan said he came from around Monroe, N. C. or Union county, N.C. He was sick for a year or so, and died with TB in 1939.
He is on the 1900 census for Union Co. at Monroe, NC living in a boarding house and working in a cotton mill. It states he is age 22 and b. in NC, and his parents b. in SC.
