From: Smith <ehlsmith@suffolk.lib.ny.us> Date: Mon, 1 Feb 1999 15:50:40 -0500 (EST) This article contains a transcript of the portion of the will naming William's daughters, made from the microfilm. It lists them in age order as Mary, Martha, Sarah, [Abigail-crossed out], Elizabeth, and Abigail "my youngest daughter". Thus, it seems to me the correction regarding Abigail was simply to rectify a mistake in omitting Elizabeth when making the list. Almost all the "original" wills found in probate research are not really the original document signed by the testator, which remained in the family's possesion, but clerk's copies made when the estate was probated. It is the clerk's copies which are the official records retained by the courts. In this case , the clerk probably lost his place when copying the document, skipped Elizabeth, caught his mistake and made the correction. Is it possible she is the sister of William vs his >daughter? As far as I've been able to tell, there is no supporting evidence for the husband of ANY of the Hallock daughters. Insofar as the Abigail / Caleb Horton marriage: There was a Caleb Horton / Abigail Horton marriage recorded in the Salmon Records 12/23/1696. If this is them, it is too late for her to be the mother of his children. However, there were other Calebs and Abigails downstream that that marriage could belong to, as Torrey apparently believed. There is a Caleb Horton in the 1698 Southold Census with Esther, presumably the wife of the Caleb Horton in that entry. Caleb Horton, in his will of abt 1702 names his second wife as Esther, confirming the 1698 census entry is likely his. Torrey has confusing entries for this Esther: Says maiden = Mapes?, "suggest Esther, widow of Mordecai Homan, but under Mordecia entry, has last name unknown. Caleb Horton was referred to as a neighbor in William Hallock's will: "Makes his wife sole executor and desires his two neighbors James Reeve, and Caleb Horton to be assistants.... " Abigail was named as William Hallock's youngest daughter in his will of 1682. I have found no clue to hang a hat on to give her a date of birth. However, it appears all the Hallock boys were "of age" in that will, as they received land in the will without any mention of waiting to wait till "of age" to get the land. I have nothing, agewise, that rules her out to be the wife of Caleb and mother to his children (in spite of the Second Boat article's contention - see below.) There is apparently a firm date on one of the kids of Caleb: Barnabas-3, September 23, 1666 (Ancestors of American Presidents-Harrison). As far as I know there are no other firm dates on the children of Caleb. He did have a daughter named Abigail (as well as one named Esther.) A grandson, Nathaniel Terry, was b November 16, 1683, minus at least 36 years = birth of grandmother nlt than 1647. Mother of Barnabas-3, b 1666, less 18 = mother born no later than 1648. (Caleb 1702, aged 62 = born 1640.) Ancestors of American Presidents buys off on her as the wife of Caleb, that may be because this marriage has been around for so long. Quite frankly, with the uncertainty surrounding the marriage and Torrey's entries for it, I am surprised AAP went along with that marriage. However, Torrey does not show Abigail-2 Hallock as the wife of Caleb-2 Horton. Torrey has Caleb Horton 1676-1706, ae 30-1-14) md Abigail Hallock ( -- 1697?); 12/23/1696. This Caleb is a different Caleb than Caleb-2, son of Barnabas-1. (I'm not sure who this Caleb is, don't find in Horton's in America.) For Caleb, son of Barnabas, Torrey shows first wife unknown. Second Wife Esther Mapes? (see above). In short, I see no evidence that Abigail was his wife. The marriage record in Salmon may very well have thrown off earlier researchers.. or it may be coming from "tradition" or handed down stories to the first Hallock Genealogy, which was published about the Civil War. An article was written, which you will find in Persi: "Caleb Horton Didn't Marry Abigail Hallock" Vol 13, No 1, April 1992 Second Boat. I have that article and found it lacking in evidence and not persuasive, but interesting, nonetheless. This may be a mystery that will be around forever.... I have been entertaining an extremely tenous speculation that she may have married Benjamin Smith of Setauket (b. say 1655-1665), s/o Arthur. I'm not posting this theory to the list yet since it is so hypothetical at this point, but if either of you have any info or clues which may tend to support or refute this I would love to hear it (or just your opinions if you wish). The few things suggesting this possibility to me are so slight I'm sort of embarassed to even mention them, but they are: - there was definitely some relationship between the children of Benjamin Smith and the Hallocks; Peter Hallock, s/o John (who was s/o William) addressed Daniel Smith, s/o Benjamin, as "Cousin", while Samuel Smith, another s/o Benjamin, wrote a letter to a "Cousin Hallock" - while Benjamin's wife's name is not known with 100% certainty, it was almost surely Abigail...Benjamin and Abigail Smith often witnessed deeds together; widow Abigail Smith appears in Town records at a time in which only Benjamin would be a good candidate for a deceased Smith spouse; she appears associated with some of Benjamin's children in the records (she survived until at least 1749). - supposedly a collection of family papers handed down by Benjamin's descendants included a number of Hallock deeds - John Hallock, s/o William, moved to Setauket where Benjamin lived - somebody had proposed that Benjamin's wife was Abigail, d/o John Hallock, but there are problems with that... Benjamin's first known child was born about 1692, prob. too early for a daughter of John Hallock to have been its mother... LI-Rooter Joy Weaver has found Quaker records which seemed to indicate that Abigail Hallock, d/o John, was still unmarried long after Benjamin's children were born For what its worth, I think if that Abigail did marry Benjamin Smith she prob. did not do so until after her father's death. You may recall that William Hallock severly chastised his son John in his will for the offense of marrying a Quaker and restricted his inheritance. If Abigail married Benjamin she prob would have incurred similar displeasure, and comments in the will, since Ben's father, Arthur Smith, was an outspoken Quaker who was run out of Southold for his heterodoxy. I haven't found any evidence that his children followed in his footsteps, and as far as I can determine Benjamin's children were Church of England or Presbyterian. I would welcome any comments or advice on the above. Ned Smith _____________ To: nmt1@ix.netcom.com Subject: Re: [LI-Rooters] Abigail Hallock From: Kalamcc@aol.com Date: Sat, 30 Oct 1999 22:19:32 EDT Norris, Thanks for your answering our note.We are going thru our Horton material to see if we can find any furthur clue. It appears that Margaret Hallock is on the 1698 Southold Town Census residing with Joseph Reeves, his wife, Abigail and their children Joseph Jr., Benjamin, David, Ezikias, Solomon, Abigail, Mary, Margaret Hallock widow, Dorothy Osmond. It is possible that this Abigail was the daughter of William & Margaret Hallock. This is an idea that we have not had time to investigate. We strongly believe she was not the wife of Caleb Horton. The theory that there was an Abigail, sister of William, seems probable, but in all likelyhood, not provable. Ned has done some great work and may very well have found the answer. Let us know if you any furthur ideas. Thanks so much for your response. Kathy & Larry
