Notes
a. Note:   H351
Note:   The Hallock Genealogy includes kids NOT IN THE WILL of Willliam II, d 1736, written 1728, (Peter > William I > William II), which might be explained by deaths before 1728, but the Hallock Genealogy indicates otherwise for at least one: Joshua (d 1766 per Hallock genealogy) William, Jr. Frances, md Griffin Kids in the will, NOT IN THE HALLOCK GENEALOGY, include: Abigail, Margaret (altho Margaret might be another name for Mehitable), Jerusha, Mehitabel. Note that in one place Margaret is mentioned, but in list of "my daughters", there is a Mehitable, but no Margaret - this may be a transcription error - but what.. left Margaret out of list of daughters? Transcribed Margaret once and Mehitable a second time for the same person?? ) Kids mentioned in BOTH the will and the Hallock Genealogy, include: Peter, Zebulon, Mary, Prudence. For the moment, I am adding the ones in the will, not the Genealogy to my database. The ones in the Genealogy, not in the will, I'm going to show as died before 1728, except for Joshua. That leaves one kid, Joshua, in the genealogy, not the will, with descendants, who lived to 1766. Anyone know how the authors came to believe he belonged to this William if not in the will? Anyone know why the disparities?? If anyone wants a copy of a transcription of this will, send me an E-Mail. William Junior, who was evidently the youngest son, and was born about 1667, also is recorded in the Southold Town Records in abstracts and other articles of interest: "{Abstract.} "To all Christian people to whome these presents shall come, Henry Case of Southold weaver, sendeth Greeting. The information has little value, save from a human interest point. Note that "do" as used below was at that time evidently a female rabbit, considered to be "vermine": "April 9 (1719) Willm Halliock, 4 young do . . . . 0.09.0" ________________ http://www.coastwebis.com/hgo/books/legal1.htm#plum The above being an abstract leaves much to be desired . . . as there is some confusion even as to the names of the daughters . . . William Junior claims "five daughters", and in the above abstract there is listed six names of daughters, unless Mehitabel and Margaret are one in the same, and one of the youngest. Also, according to Charles Hallock (1906) there was a third son, Joshua, born about 1690, and evidently the eldest of the sons. Joshua "settled in Hallock’s Neck, now Old Neck in Moriches." . . . "William Hallock, who was 80 years old in 1866, and who lived near Moriches with his father Jonathan, son of Zebulon, states that his father always spoke of David, son of Joshua, as his first cousin, and of their father Zebulon and Joshua as brothers, and sons of William of Southold, (William Junior), and that Peter had no children." "Of many unexpected coincidences confirming facts in the ancestry, a singular one corroborates the evidence that Joshua Hallock of Moriches was the son of William (Junior)." Quoting the same William Hallock above, Charles Hallock goes on to say, "grandfather, Zebulon, and this Joshua were brothers, and relates that their father, William of Southold, (unhappily) had possession of two very smart colored men, Jack and Brister; that he gave Jack to his son Zebulon, and Brister to his son Joshua in Moriches, with striking anecdotes of Brister’s energy and kindness well known in Moriches. This Joshua moved to Orange county, N.Y., near Chester church, of which his son Jonathan was a founder and an officer. In the records of that church were found Lewis Hallock and two female Hallocks, "colored," doubtless the children of this same Brister." But why no mention of Joshua in the 1698 census? Was he dis-inherited in his father’s will, as there is no mention of him in the above abstract? And, William's will clearly gives his slaves to Zebulon and PETER, not Joshua. No record is found of William (3d), son of William Junior, and named in the census of 1698. And since he is not named in the will either, may we presume that he died young, or perhaps he, like his brother Joshua, may be presumed disinherited? No he was most likely the one died 1717. ______________ eter (IA), William: WILLIAM HALLOCK JUNIOR, (son of) William, (grandson of) Peter. William was the son of William and Margaret (Howell) Hallock, and born about 1667, probably in Aqubogue. About 1668 he married Mary ( ), of whom no other record has been found. William Hallock died in the spring of 1736, leaving a will dated 8 June 1728, in which he left his estate to his children below. William and Mary Hallock resided in or near Southold, on lands that were given him by his father’s will in 1684. He also owned lands in Brookhaven Town, Long Island, and probably lived there prior to his father’s death. Their children were: 1. Joshua, born about 1690; 2. Peter, born about 1692; 3. Jerusha; 4. Prudence -Griffin, born about 1693; 5. Mary; 6. Mehitabel, (or Margaret); 7. Abigail; 8. Zebulon, born about 1694; (see below:) 9. William Junior, (3rd), born about 1696. Zebulon Hallock, son of William Junior, is mentioned at least briefly, in the Southold Town Records also, as is his son, Zebulon Junior. Note that the spellings of the surname are gradually becoming more consistent with the present-day spelling: {Abstract.} "To all Christian people Greeting, Know Ye, that I, Zebulon Hallock of Southold, weaver, in consideration of the Sum of ten pounds five Shillings, do sell and confirm unto John Colefax, of New London, cordwaner three lotts of land lying in Hallocks Neck division, bounded west by the land of Samuell Griffing — North by the highway — east by the sd Samuell Griffing — South by the beach or harbor. John Cleause Jr., on Oct 10, 1717 married Mary (1697 - 1785) Hallock, d/o William and Mary (Horton) Hallock. This does not mention how Mary Horton fits into the Horton tree. If you find out, please let me know."
