a. Note:   Buffalo was located by Joseph F. Miles who built the first house in 1839. The town was incorporated in 1854 and again in 1870. The square contained the courthouse designed by Dr. E. Hovey while superintendent of the public buildings in 1868. The old courthouse was burned during the Civil War on October 18, 1863, July 30, 1864, and again on September 3, 1867, by the Confederates. Two other houses used for judicial purposes shared the same fate. In the burning of the second house, the county records were destroyed; they were replace. However, in the destruction of the third building, the records were lost. The records have been (for the third time) replaced and lodged in the fire-proof vaults of the new courthouse.
