Rd. 24 - South of Rout 37 between Nixon's Knob & Newlons farm. Below is a transcript ( to the best I could make it out) of a letter sent to Luke Breese and Polly Hopkins-Breese from one of Luke's brothers upon the death of his wife. The following text was transcribed from an old letter in the possession of Claris Taylor, daughter of O. Curtis Taylor. This letter was written by a brother of Luke Breese. Luke Breese was her (Claris) Great Grandfather. August 26, 1841 Deer brother, it is with pain that I take my pen in hand to inform you of the death of my affectionate wife. On the 21st I buried hir (her) after a long and seveire spell. She was confined to hir (her) bed 13 weakes and 3 days. I had 3 Dr's to tend hir (her) but all could not save her. Was the consumption. She left me and my little boy to mourn our loss, the loss that I shall never regain, nor restore in this life. Tho my loss was his gain, for she profest religion before she died. She said that she saw his way brite to heaven and prayed day after day that all her friends mite meet hir (her) in heaven. She told me to write to you all and tell you to meet her in heaven. Wish parting would be now more forever. Luke Breese you must take good cair (care) of your wife for you have got a good one and sow (so) had I but she gon to where no traveler returns. Pinkerton and the folks in McConnelsville (Ohio). Write as soon as you git (get) this and let me know how you are ,now moved to Preston. Herein is a small lock of her hair for Polly to remember her with. I still remain your Affectionate Brother, A __ Breese Below is info found on the internet. Not sure if this is our Luke or not. The BREESE/BREEZE has been seen spelled both ways. If Luke were named after his father this could also be him. A Breese married a Sheets. Today I went to the Ohio Historical Society. I looked at a lot of history books on Morgan County. I was looking for my grandparents but at first could not find them but I could find all their neighbors. Then I found them in a 1900 census in Union Twp. (should have been Deerfield) and their name was spelled Sheets instead of Scheetz. But anyway I found Luke Breese in an 1850 Morgan County census book. They were from Deerfield Twp. It was listed as follows: Luke Breese age 41, born in Virginia and a Farmer; is wife Mary age 41, born in Pennsylvania; now their children.... Violet age 19, Nancy age 15, Sarah age 13, Albert age 11, Mary age 9, Harriet age 6, Amos age 3 (who eventually married my grandfather's sister Emma Scheetz) and John age 1. He could have named his child Luke, after his father. I think this Joshua Breeze is the father of my Luke Breese. No real proof at this time but a good avenue to explore. Info sent by J. Stimson who is also descended from Luke Breese: Several years ago I did some research on Luke Breese. I am a descendent of Eliza Harriet Breese Skinner. The information I have I got from her family bible. I visited Ohio to do a research trip and also uncovered tidbits of information that I am including. Also visited the cemetery where most of these people are buried. Some info is from the grave markers. It had the following. I do not know how accurate the information is: Luke S. H. Breese. Birthplace was 30 miles south of Winchester, VA on the left side of the Shenandoah River. Democrat-4-7-1899. His parents in company of one older brother than Luke and 3 younger brothers came tothe, then "Far West". They brought all their possessions in a cart drawn by two horses to their new home in Morgan County, 8 miles west of where McConnelsville is now, in June 1817. Luke was 8 years old. Married Mary Hopkins (AKA Polly) October 28,1830. They moved to a lease hold consisting of 50 acres on the northern end of his fathers farm. In 1834 he sold his lease hold to his father and purchased a farm of their own. They had nine children--4 sons and 5 daughters. Theree daughters and two sons survived- forty-seven grandchildren. Deed Book D, page 305 Luke Breese from Joshua and wife, Sarah (Breese)-- land in Range 13, Twp. 9, Sec 20. Luke was leasing from Joshua land at $1.00 per year. At Joshua's death, the land was to go to Luke. This is the land discussed in the Will. Luke DOD: March 23, 1899 at age 89y 8m 14d in Morganville, Union Twp. Born: VA. Died of old age.
